(OT) 3dCARD: 32M slower than 16m??

by GraDe » Sat, 04 Aug 2001 02:19:55

Hi I hope someone can give me some help.

I had a 16M voodoo banshee card installed on my PC with reasonable effect.
I now installed a 32M nVidia card and it's actually running a lot slower...
when it runs... If I set all acceration features up to give maximum quality
I get nothing but crashes, and hangs on various games and problems with
windows. On a medium setting it seems to limit the amount of problems so I
can play the games but FPTS are not as high as on the 16M card and that with
detail turned down! Why can't i get it to run max detail and why is it
slower than a card half it's power when it's set at medium to low detail?

Any help appreciated.

Did you remove all traces of the Banshee drivers? Get the Nvidia 12.90
drivers if your card is a Geforce2. Install at least directx7 if you
haven't already.

What nVidia card is it? The amount of memory on the card has no effect
on speed, it just allows you to use higher res. That said, usually
cards with more mem are faster cards anyway. But if you're comparing
Glide and OpenGL, it may just be that the 32mb card is slower.

Make sure you've completely uninstalled the Banshee. Go into Safe mode
- control panel and remove all 3d card entries except for the new one.

Latest drivers obviously, dx7 or 8, upgrade bios, all the usual
tricks.

Well they always use the memory as a big selling point "a 32mb card is
obviously twice as fast" type bullshit. Like I said though, they
usually only put more memory on faster cards generally. You still
haven't mentioned what video card you upgraded to...

But make sure you do all the uninstall tricks, d/l the latest drivers,
etc.

I had a hideous problem with my geforce mx card & gp3, but it was
"user error" :)

I had the AGP speed set to "manual 2x" in the advanced tweak options,
and once I set it to "let the applications control it" it worked fine.

you might have a similar kind of problem......

Are you sure it was AGP speed not Antialiasing(FSAA), AGP speed isn't
adjustable by the advaced options unless you are using NvMax and it sounds
like it was FSAA because GP3 does not like Nvidia's FSAA at all.
