RASCAR: Roster Update and Paintjobs

by John Simmon » Thu, 10 Oct 2002 08:38:22

I've updated the roster page for the following individuals:

#34 Tim White
#36 Steve Lane (unauthorized re-paint - see below)
#67 Uwe (authorized re-paint)
#97 Don Wilshe
#170 Joon Li (authorized re-paint)

Sometimes I get bored and pick a rascar car to repaint. I only do the
ones that in my opinion lack a certain amount of Nascaricity.
Sometimes, I merely change the nmumbers, but other times, I do an entire
facelift.  I am not trying to ridicule your abilities as a painter, I'm
just interested in the cars that I see on the track look tidy, and
secondarily, look like stockcars.  So please don't take it the wrong way
(so far I don't think anyone has), I'm just bored and thinking about the
next rascar race.  With that out of the way:

To Uwe - I added the scottish flag, but I couldn't put it on the blue
section because it ended up looing like a white "X".  I put it on the
leading edge of the hood, and on the back of the rear spoinler. Hope
that's okay with you.

To DaveFischer - I did a repaint of your car to A) make it more
Nascarish in my eyes, and B) because I wanted to use the paintscheme
(it's flashier and easier to identify on the track). I posted a message
on racesimcentral some time back with an image, but you never responded
with a yay or nay.  I can post a pic on racesimcentral if you're
interested. :)

To Lee Ward - I did a repaint of your car too - yours wasn't bad at all,
I just thought the numbers needed to be a bit different.  I was
surprised to find out that England had it's own flag (and I assume
that's what you were going after with the white car/red stripes).  I
couldn't find a decent Harrod's logo on the net, so your decklid is
bare.  I did change the fonts all around because I didn't have one like
yours and didn't really feel like looking around for it. I can post a
pic on racesimcentral if you're interested.:)

To Steve Lane - I repainted your car without asking you, but I did post
a note about it on the racesimcentral board, and you never responded.

To Greg Lyle - I started a repaint of your car, but you only showed up
for (I think) one race, so I stopped working on it.  I re-did the Van
Halen logo on the hood and outlined the numbers in yellow to help them
stand out a bit more.  I also changed the "Mean Street" and "Play Fast"
text to green to help it stand out better against the red.  I was
puzzl;ing over the best way to simulate the album cover you were using
when I decided to stop. I can post a pic of what I have so far on
racesimcentral if you're interested.

To anyone I've done cars for (auhorized or not), the PSP files are
available if you want them.

There's two rules he has to follow in order to post mnessages and car
files:

1) I think (I'm not sure) he has to join (get an account on)
racesimcentral.

2) His file can't be larger than 500k.  I *know* he can't post files if
he's not a member on racesimcentral.

3) I don't remember him having already registered for participation in
RASCAR yet.  I went back and looked, and I haven't seen anything from
him. Of course, he may have and I simply missed it.

He needs to go to the roster page and read the lead-in.  That includes
clicking the "Roster" link in the table of contents frame.

There are no strict paint rules, the only rules is about the numbering,
John is just a bit ***about how a Nascar Cup car should be painted, so
if he doesn't like the paint scheme you're running, he will redo it on
his own machine so it looks the way he wants them to look

And since John is a very talented car painter (I can't believe I just
said that as it's not like his ego needs inflating) some people adopt
his "alternative" paint jobs over their own

> > Ahhh well, you can delete my carfile, working weekends keeps me from getting
> > to join anyway....and whats with the strict paint rules anyhoo?

I don't think the painting rules are all that strict, and in fact only
deals with the car numbers - They have to be large enough to be seen,
have to be in three spots (both sides and the back), and be contrasty
enough with the paint scheme to be seen.  Beyond that, we don't need any
childish ***like nudity, cuss words, or otherwise provocative text on
the car.  I don't that's restrictive at all.

Beyond that, I *personally* believe that a stockcar should look like a
stockcar - not a rally car, not a drag racer, or anything else.  With
all the other impurities and mistakes in the game, I want as much
immersion as possible where the appearance of the cars is concerned (and
I don't think that's a lot to expect, and it's certainly easy to
address).

Now, having said that, it's plainly obvious (to me, anyway) that several
people hastily painted a car for use in RASCAR.  There is absolutely
NOTHING wrong with that, especially if it meets the painting specs
mentioned in the first paragraph.  Those are the cars I started with,
and there's a few more I intend on re-painting (for my own use) and that
I will subsequently offer to the people that drive them.  If they don't
want them (and it's happened a couple of times), it won't bother me it
the least because I can still use  my version of their car on my system.

Remember, I'm not doing this to***anyone off - I'm doing it for my
own edification (usually because I'm bored) and then offering up the
results to the people who drive the cars I repaint.  I try to make each
repaint unique while keeping the original theme (if any) and basic
colors in mind.

The only reason I started re-painting yours, Greg, was because I could
hardly see the number.  In the process, I decided to repaint the whole
car but like I said, you never raced with  us (or only raced once), so I
lost interest.  However, if you'd like the hand-made van halen logo I
did, you're welcomed to it (it's a vector image in PSP format for easy
modification). :)
