GP3 Interview - 1

by Steve Ferguso » Wed, 23 Feb 2000 04:00:00

I'm glad you bothered.  I access through the Swiss phone service, which is
also not free.  I'm not going to wet my pants over the cost of a cup of
coffee, especially since this was discussed a few times beforehand, and
there was a definite problem with accessing the information in the binary
groups.  Magazine articles on this highly anticipated game are some of the
more useful information in this group lately (that and Clegg's question
about sliding tires that is really sticking in my head).

So thanks.  Don't worry too much about the UK folks who bleat the same
nonsense every time a binary pops up here.  I can count on my fingers the
number of times a binary has been sent here. And of those, most have been
interesting for a broad audience.  With all the fuss, one would think
people are still using 1200baud modems.  It's not like the newsgroup is
getting 10 binaries a day...

Stephen

: Look mate,

:  I SENT them to the binary group a couple of days ago.

: Checked replies (from Rafe M)

: Not everyone can get binary group, bloke from other side of the planet who

: After exchanged messages, posted them here for bloke from other side of the

: like to see and read whole article.

: You should of passed on by.

: Re: UK phone charges.

: I live in UK, so I know EXACTLY how much it ***ing costs.

: Download one then stop....go read something else.

: Maybe I shouldn't have bothered....just trying to add to GP3 debate.

: Ian.
: Northern UK.

Ian mate, I'm with you on this one. Much appreciated too.

Whilst I have access to binary groups I loathe having to wade through
gallons of shite to get what I want. Pedantic ***s that don't want anything
other than text in r.a.s because it doesn't have the magical .binaries.
included in the title can take a running jump.

You did us a favour mate. I'm in the UK too so I know the pain of phone
bills too, but really 40 odd pence is hardly gonna keep you in chocolate
biscuits for five minutes these days. It's hardly a life shattering expense
for quality merchandise is it.

Cheers,
(Climbing into the flame-proof bunker)
Colin

PS. Ian, you up for a GPL LAN sometime, by the look of it your not a million
miles away from my end of the country. Good excuse for a piss-up too (spot
the Scotsman)

Dave, not including the text from all the previous posts in the thread
saves a lot of bandwidth too...

I have discovered that if one wishes to post a scanned article from a
magazine, it is often a better idea to use GIF.  Text on a page is really
only two colors, and a decent image editing program can give you a GIF with
2,4,8, 16, 32 or whatever number of colors rather than the usual 256.
Broadly generalized, GIF discards color info to reduce file size and JPG
discards detail, so in this application GIF is sometimes a better choice.
The file sizes can be smaller, there is no loss of detail in the type and
there are none of the 'squiggly' artifacts that sometimes accompany JPG
compression.

Not a bad idea, as long as the pix are zipped up to reduce space. You
can never get the same compression as available in a jpeg. It all
depends on the picture in question and what its use is.

Although I will give a nod to the argument about possibly (and one should
stress "possibly") jeapordizing free access for newsgroup storage on
public servers.  A newsgroup jammed with hundreds of binaries a day will
generate this kind of attention.  One or two will not.
