GPL setup theory for greenhorns???

by sgtslop.. » Fri, 16 Jun 2000 04:00:00

Okay, I've done the "one car, one track, one setup" thing with GPL off
and on for a couple of months; Eagle, Spa, std setup with full-fuel --
now I've decided to attempt some setup changes (something I've had
modest success with in Papy's N-series over the years), but I'm stumped.

I read somewhere that Spa needs a little oversteer, but first to lower
the fuel load so I can chase down the AI in those long (for me), 9-lap
races -- don't laugh.  So I cut the fuel load in half, with no other
changes, and immediatly picked up a push (along with slightly better
lap times of course) where I used to have a nice, comfortable trailing
throttle oversteer...  So I (very slowly), started playing with sway-
bars trying to put a little more cornering load on the rear, then a
pound more air in the rear tires, but I really don't want to kill rear
tire stick, I want to increase the front end bite and now after
lowering the front and raising the rear slightly (attempting, I
thought, to play with roll-centers, hence weight transfer).

What I've got now is a quirky beast that has about half the trailing-
throttle oversteer I'd like (I was quite comfortable with trailing
throttle balance the way it came out of the box), and a very noticeable
push coming off the tighter corners which transitions into an explosive
oversteer once it gets on the pipe.  Braking is just plain a bear,
although I seem to be able to down-shift almost anywhere in the turn
without upsetting the car too badly -- I'm now officially lost...

I'm no Jimmy Clark, so there are lots of driver induced problems to be
sure (can't seem to tune those out either), but so far I've not touched
brakes, shocks or any of the stuff I'm familar with from N1, N2, N3...
This is a wonderful Sim, but at the rate I'm going, I'm going to have
to start over with the BRM, or maybe a taxicab.

Ideas, basic theory, websites????

Thanks, Sgt

Hey Sarge,

Check out Ricardo's GPL site, it's a great place to start:

The coast side settings on your differential can have a big influence on
trailing throttle oversteer.  The best site for setup theory is:
http://website.lineone.net/~richardn/   Good Luck!

Run, do not walk to this URL: http://simracing.com/alison/gpl/

Alison Hine and her brother Nate have a program called GRE that has
been of tremendous benefit to the "setup theory impared".  The utility
is quite useful in of itself, but the associated Help files really
give you the straight poop on doing setups.

One tip I can give you.  The Diff settings have a lot to do with how
the car will corner.  Try taking a corner neither accelerating nor
deceleration, but at a neutral throttle.  It behaves completely
different because that's the only time the diff isn't locked up.  When
the diff's locked (to a greater or lesser extent depending on it's
settings) the back wheels want to turn at the same speed which tends
to make the car understeer straight ahead.

Please, PLEASE! don't do that.

Its "Jim Clark", never, EVER, "Jimmy" Clark!

And no, I can't help you with your set-up problems, sorry. I had a
pretty good take on the GP2 set-ups, but GPL just loses me
completely. So I stick to the default set-ups or other peoples....

Please accept my apology... Unfortunately "Jimmy" has been (albeit
erroneously) part of my lexicon for over four decades and unlearning it
is still very much a work in progress.  However, in the interest of
trans-Atlantic congeniality, I'll have another go at it.

Thanks for the sites -- I'm readin'

The differential lock-up settings never occured to me; but now that I
think about I recall a discussion on this board about that just before
I got GPL -- so much to learn...

Thanks again, Sgt

Eh? Jim Clark was known as Jimmy as well. For example, Derek Bell, quoted in
Jim Clark by Eric Dymock, "Jimmy told me, ' don't get too close when you
come up to lap me because my engine is spitting and banging'...". Most often
Jim, yes, but not exclusively.

Tony Whitley
Still so much in awe of Jim Clark that I get a lump in my throat if I crash
into his computerised alter ego
