Replacement for "Winston" Sponsorship in NASCAR!

Wow....I came in here tonight expecting to see this pasted all over the
newsgroup.....and nothing!  I went back 8 days.....just in case my info was
stale?  Still nothing.

Word is the official announcement will come from NASCAR on this Thursday
(press conference at Infineon).  The word also is its a 10-year deal!

I know who it is, but without any thing in here on the topic, I think I will
shut up about it.

boring...they are just being realistic and finding another source for cash
when the full weight of the anti-tabacco advertising kicks in.
guess we'll just have to refer to them as 'cup' cars now.

says...

I think everyone that cares knows it's Nextel.  It's been know for
about a year that this was coming, it was just a matter of waiting
for the official announcement.

From what I've read,  Visa has also made a $80m bid for "the cup"...

My question is that RJR just signed a 5 year deal last year for the
sponsorship so does this mean the Nextel thing kicks in after the Winston
name expires in 4 more years or will this allow RJR to back out of the deal
they signed?

RJR is backing out after this year and asked NASCAR to find another sponsor.

It probably costs a lot less to sponsor other racing series, and they
can only do one.

Who in the heck wants to follow something called the 'Nextel Cup'? LOL!

I dunno, I thought the PowerAde thing over in the NHRA was going to be
weird, but it seems to be doing okay, I guess I can learn to call it Nextel
or Visa or whomever ends up with it.

I say Craftsman should have stepped up to 'Cup' and left the trucks to find
a sponsor. I think a tool sponsor would be better suited than a cell phone
outfit that may or may not survive the next 5 years or may get bought or
absorbed. I had heard Visa wanted in too, but then we'd have too many
rednecks with run-up Visa bills....no, it should be a tool company or
something else remotely inoolved with the sport IMO. (Back when Winston
bought in, most of the drivers were still smoking cigs in the cars while
racing. How many use their Visa cards or cell phones while racing now? :-)
LOL!

Well I hope it's not Aaron's Rent-to-Own, because calling it "Aaron's Cup"
sounds a little weird...

I'll be happy to see the auto sims for "smokers only" go by the wayside.

My understanding is that *if* NASCAR finds a replacement ready for
next year, it goes into effect next year and allows Winston to drop
the sponsorship.  If they can't, then Winston will fulfill however
much of their contract (up to filling it completely) remains until
NASCAR can get a new sponsor.  Due to the popularity of WC racing, we
can see that it won't be too much longer...  For better or worse.

After the 'wonderful TV deal' which has turned out to make for worse
racing and a decrease in sponsored cars (who would have thought we'd
see the day that Rousch would have any trouble getting sponsors on his
cars - I'm mainly talking about his BGN cars, but Jeff Burton just
lost *his* sponsor?!??!) in WC and BGN, I'm beginning to get worried.
Then again, nothing I can do other than change the channel if it gets
real bad.

Supposedly one of the biggest hangups with making Nextel the primary
sponsor is they wanted exclusivity of cellular advertising.  Meaning,
if they're paying $80 million for the deal, they don't want TV cameras
focusing on the #31 Cingular Wireless car or the #12 Alltel car.  RJR
Reynolds never had to worry about advertising Phillip Morris products
on their dime.  It'll be interesting to see what happens.

Yeah, like Fox doesn't already catch enough ***for NOT showing cars
sponsored by compaines that don't buy airtime on their network during the
race broadcasts. I can see this Nextel wrinkle being a big deal if it comes
to pass as you have opined here.
