GOOOO CANADA GOOO

As a truly outside party (UK) I was damn glad to see the Canadians win
because a) the USA won far too many medals for a country that usually has no
interest in any winter sport except ice-hockey (fix?) and b) because
Canadians aren't taken seriously by United Statesians.  Oh and c) go
Commonwealth!

I've never seen that movie and was sort of quoting from their routine on
SCTV. On SCTV it was the other guy, Dave Thomas, who did the Darth Vader
thing.

Yea, but not many people here actually talk like that, but Bob and Doug made
all the americans think we do.

Probably depends on what part of Canada you are from.  I used to
vacation every summer around the eastern shore of Lake Superior, near
Wawa.  The Doug and Bob routine is a pretty good *caricature* of how
people talk in that region.  OTOH I work with a lot of people from
Windsor and nearby parts, and those people only have the slightest trace
of an accent.  It's a regional thing, just like the southern accent or
the eastern accent that we sometimes get teased about in the U.S.  I
mean really, any accent that is not your own always sounds a little
funny, don't you think?  Don't want people to think I am down on
Canada - I am not, I have always loved Canada and Canadians, and I think
most Americans look at Canada as a good neighbor, despite the jokes.  I
mean really, we wouldn't know what good beer is without you guys!  ;o)

Well, I was in WAWA last summer and didn't notice them saying "eh?" after
every sentence. But, you are correct it is a regional thing, but also an
educational thing. If you want to hear funny lingo just go to New Foundland.

Actually the sillier part of that whole thing is that some people in
Northern Michigan (Upper Peninsula) also have a little bit of that
accent and speech pattern, so it is really even more of a regional thing
than a national thing.

Never been there, but after seeing that movie Fargo I have to say people in
Fargo, North Dakota talk just as funny as some do here. :-)

Hehe.  Okay in the interests of equal opportunity, here's an "American"
joke:

It's the first day of school and the teacher thought she'd get to
know the kids by asking them their name and what their father does
for a living.

The first little girl says: "My name is Mary and my daddy is a
postman."
The next little boy says: "I'm Andy and my Dad is a mechanic."
Then one little boy says: "My name is Jimmy and my father is a
*** dancer in a cabaret for gay men."

The teacher gasps and quickly changes the subject, but later in the
school yard the teacher approaches Jimmy privately and asks if it
was really true that his Dad dances *** in a gay bar.
He blushed and said, "I'm sorry but my dad plays hockey for Team
USA, and I was just too embarrassed to say so."

It was an OT thread about some obscure sport played on an ice surface. There
are no wheels or motors involved, so it beats me what people see in it. :-)
