Help!! Stop an otherwise sane man from taking a sledgehammer to his PC!

Problem: When running GPL online through WinVROC, GPL will hang or lock up.
This occurs, in most instances, when exiting the track back to the pits, for
example following a qualifying session: press ESC, then ENTER to return to
the pits. Less frequently, GPL will hang when first attempting to enter the
pits, that is after clicking the green button. In every case, the monitor
makes a couple of usual clicking noises, then the screen goes blank,
sometimes accompanied by sound, sometimes not. ALT+CTRL+DEL is the only
solution, but of course, I'm then unable to rejoin the race. On occasion,
simply waiting at the conclusion of qualifying, rather than pressing ESC
then ENTER will return me to the pits.

This problem first showed about six weeks ago, after about a year of trouble
free racing. I can't figure out how my system may have changed at that time.
GPL has been uninstalled, then reinstalled with NO add-ons or new tracks,
except for the 1.2 patch. Ditto for WinVROC. As a last resort, I reformatted
my hard drive and reinstalled everything. No joy. I've tried disabling the
screensaver, as desktop properties lists no screensaver selected after
running GPL. Might this be a clue? I have Norton Anti-virus disabled. I have
the latest drivers for my vid card. I use the "Enditall" utility to shut
everything off in the background.

System specs:

P2 350
128mb
Matrox MGA-G200
Diamond Monster Voodoo 2 12mb (with latest drivers from 3Dfx)
Creative Labs Sound Blaster PCI128
U.S. Robotics 56k Win INT
Windows 98 SE
DirectX 7.0a
GPL 1.2.0.1 US Version
WinVroc 2.1.0.0 with "vroc.ods.org" fix

One final, and likely important note: problem occurs only online. When
racing offline, everything operates as it should, with no difficulties.

Go easy on me, I'm no computer genius.

I hope a solution can be found soon; I'm rapidly losing my enthusiasm for
GPL. If those within the GPL fail to hear from me, you may assume that I
have, indeed, used the aforementioned sledgehammer.

Sorry for the lengthy post; I wanted to include as much information as
possible.

Johnny Lugnuts

Sounds like a problem with changing screen resolutions but I dunno why
it would be just online.  Your modem and one of the vid cards sharing
irq????  You might try fiddling with the monitor refresh rate and
setting the resolution on your desktop and gpl to the same value.  And
you should definitely not have a screen saver.  Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply.

GPL and desktop both run at 1024x768. As I stated, I'm no computer genius; I
don't have a clue what IRQ is. Monitor refresh rates? Huh?

I'm no genius either but I'll try.  Monitor refresh rate is at control
panel/display/settings/advanced/adapter.  I suggest you try one of the
numeric choices like 60.  Then if it helps try different settings til
you find one that works and you like.  But, again, I dunno why it would
just be a problem online unless there is some conflict with your
modem.  The irq list is at programs/ accessories/system tools/system
information/hardware resources/conflicts-sharing.  If the modem and vid
are sharing, try to change by moving the v2 to a different slot.  Post
again if the sharing persists.

Someone else just had the same type of problem(problems ONLY online).  Did you

providers, or his line quality suddenly changed - I can't remember.  This
caused his winmodem to pull more 'power' from his computer, and messed up his
online experience.  You also have a winmodem.  My guess is it's the same type
of thing.  Try another modem.

Thansk for your help.

I've followed your instructions, here is my IRQ list:

IRQ 5 Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
IRQ 5 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
IRQ 10 Creative Labs Sound Blaster PCI128
IRQ 10 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
IRQ 11 U.S. Robotics 56K Win INT
IRQ 11 Matrox MGA-G200 AGP
IRQ 11 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
IRQ 14 Primary IDE controller (dual fifo)
IRQ 14 Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller
IRQ 15 Secondary IDE controller (dual fifo)
IRQ 15 Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller

I don't see which slot is the V2 card. Any suggestions?

Thanks Eldred.

I've been with the same ISP for a year and a half, so I'm doubtful that's
the problem. BTW, I had no idea mine was a Winmodem. What modem would you
suggest?

Looks like the conflicts/sharing list but no matter.  The matrox card
and the modem are sharing.  I am NOT certain this is causing the
problem but if it was me I would try to eliminate anything sharing with
the vid card.  First I would try moving the modem to a different slot
and see if that gets rid of the conflict.

4 Communications Port (COM1)
5 Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
5 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
6 Standard Floppy Disk Controller
7 ECP Printer Port (LPT1)
8 System CMOS/real time clock
9 (free)
10 Creative Labs Sound Blaster PCI128
10 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
11 U.S. Robotics 56K Win INT
11 Matrox MGA-G200 AGP
11 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
12 WheelMouse1 (PS/2)
13 Numeric data processor
14 Primary IDE controller (dual fifo)
14 Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller

What brand of BIOS your motherboard got?  I've got Award BIOS, & you can
set the modem IRQ from within one of the menus there.

I've always found external modems to be a *lot* less headache.  Before I
got cable, I used a Creative Labs Modem Blaster 56k v90.  Good luck!

If you actually move the modem card to a different physical slot in the
puter, w98 may assign a different irq when you boot.  Do NOT use the
slot next to the agp slot which I assume contains your matrox card.
Or, your bios may allow you to force the irq.  It is ok for the modem
to share a irq.  But nothing should share with the vid card.  The
puzzling thing is that it used to work ok.  Unless you installed some
hardware just before the problem started.  Good luck.

After installing ZoneAlarm 2.0 a personal firewall program, I had this
same problem. Have you or maybe has your provider installed a
firewall?

In desperate need of GPL help

I just picked up a used 33.6 hardware modem (DAVICOM) just for VROC (I still use
the winmodem for surfing). VROC is now more stable with lower latencies and
better quality with a lot less warping, and I was able to turn on more graphics.
And way cheaper than a USB modem.

Hope this helps
