NASCAR and ICR2 - need two-player help, we are desperate

by Bob Daniels » Wed, 11 Sep 1996 04:00:00

I have two machines connected with a null modem cable (the LapLink
"factory" cable).  One is a P-90, the other a 486-66, both have 16550
ports.  I cannot get either NASCAR or ICR2 to run in two-player mode.
Invariably, I get a timeout, "slow connection" error, or "can't
send/receive tracks" error before ever getting to start a race.

As far as I know, I have the latest version of each program.
The hardware setup works fine, with the two machines communicating
perfectly in:  Lap Link, Doom, Microsoft Flight Sim 5.1, and others.
Only the two Papyrus games won't talk to each other.

This is a major frustration item at our house.  Can any one help?

Bob:

My roommate and I have the exact same problem. Nascar & ICR2 are the
*wierdest* games to null-modem link. Even with the suggestions I'm about
to give ya, we're only successful maybe 60% of the time.(luckily we have
separate phone lines to use during the other 40%)

A. current version of Nascar is v1.21
B. If you're in DOS mode to play, try unloading your mouse drivers. (I
know that sounds wierd. I can't make sense of it either, but it
sometimes works)
C. Reccomend checking the IRMUL Modem Racers list:
http://www.localnet.org/users/ctelecom/
for the proper modem init strings..remember you need to disable error
detection, error correction, and data compression.
D. As a last ditch effort, try setting the answering PC to a *higher*
baud rate than the calling one.
i.e.: caller uses 14.4, answerer uses 19.2.

Having experienced your agony, I wish you the best of luck!
