XP Question.

Hi Experts:

I make my living on my PC, running Solaris.

I have WIN 98 SE on the first partition for racing and
flight sims.

I've been thinking about going with XP, in order to
move into some Windows development.

I see people are using XP Home for sims.

Is XP Pro suitable for sims?

I have two 600 MHz P3s in my 2 year old box, are there
any sims that can take advantage of dual processors?

Is there any multi-processing of system level services
that single threaded sims can take advantage of with no
programming?

I have a V5/5500 video card.  I see people are using
Win 2000 drivers for XP.  What version of DX is supported
by this setup?

The one thing I can't do is loose Need for Speed Porsche.
My friends would kill me.  I'm planning on starting on-line
NFS-PU, so I'd like to be compatible.

                                                   Thanks
                                                   Larry

carefully:

I am not sure about the above questions, but you would have to get
WinXP Pro to take advantage of your dual cpu setup, home is single cpu
only.

I am running NFS:PU happily on my system under XP pro, and I love it!
Great game flawed only by a slightly limited choice of tracks and cars
(I want more racing Porsches!)

I play GPL and SBK2001 on WP Pro with no problems, apart from the ***y
SBLive noise issues.

Oh, and thanks to Spadge Fromley for a solution to the SB Live problem: Turn
down Accelerated Sound to DirectX Only and it goes away. :-)

XP Pro and Home are the same as far as application compatibility, Home removes
some of the more advanced network and security features that MS figures home
users won't need, and it also removes Multiprocessor capability.  I don't know
of any sims that take advantage natively of multiple processors, but using XP
Pro you could set the OS to run on one processor and the sim/etc. to run on your
other one.  As for NFS Porche, I'm not sure if it will work or not, there is a
"compatibility" mode setting for XP where you can run in Win95/98/ME/NT/2000
compatibility mode, though it doesn't always work.  I do have a couple of the
NFS games but haven't tried them on XP yet..........I'm still running a beta of
XP Pro too so they may have fixed or broken things in the final release but from
what I remember from the MS groups a few months back the NFS games were
"supposed" to work.

I'd say so, I've been playing GPL on my 928MHz Celeron box (gotta love
overclocking ;) with WinXP Pro and absolutely no problems with all of the
current patches (except the CPU one, which I didn't bother applying since
I'm still well under that limit, heh).  In fact, since I got 'back in' to
GPL, I just now set a new PB at Monza, even over where I was a little over a
year ago when I stopped for some reason (school, prolly =)

I think someone already mentioned it, but you should be able to assign
programs to specific processors.  Can't say I've tried it myself, as my box
is still single-CPU...

XP ships with DX8.1; and I have heard some issues with 3dFX boards and XP,
but not sure exactly what/how severe they are.

That's good news.  GPL freezes, I have a post about it
a couple of days ago.

Hopefully my TB Santa Cruz sound card will have good
drivers when I'm ready to take the  plunge.

Obviously you would have to use the beta drivers for the V5 in Win XP,
but they are 3rd party hacks only and aren't guaranteed to run in XP.
Glide is also dead in XP apparently as well. Harware acceleration is
going to be your biggest issue. I'd sugget you'd be better off with a
dual boot to ensure that your V5 works properly. Or get a newer video
card :)

TBSC already has good XP drivers.

I have NFS:PU and will try it on XP later for you. The 3DFX drivers that
come with XP don't support Glide, but you can get hacked drivers that do I
believe. D3D games should be fine.

I can't get GPL running on XP Home. It's the *only* game I haven't been able
to get running on XP yet. Are you using NTFS? I think GPL might have a
problem with NTFS partitions. I get the GPL splash screen then a dump to the
desktop.
