of one of the machines behind the router which should then allow both
machines to connect to the same external server at the same time. It should
also work for GPL, though I've personally never tried it.

I would suggest a switch not a hub if you don't get a router. I ran a 10/100
hub for the longest until I tested the actual bandwidth, ugh.

Re DHCP, you also make a valid statement - and the point is I assume you're
referring to the usual DHCP issues. I use it mostly for the added
challenge ;) Static IP management on a home LAN of my size (5 nodes) is
ridiculously easy and bullet-proof, but I still choose to run DHCP just so I
can troubleshoot things once in a while...
