With NASCAR4 you may specify a different "net_server_port" in the CORE.INI
of one of the machines behind the router which should then allow both
machines to connect to the same external server at the same time.  It should
also work for GPL, though I've personally never tried it.

N4 Online Behind a Router Advice Needed!

I use a 5 port 100Mb switch with 3 computers connected to it in peer-to-peer
LAN setup (no "server") and have 2 IPs from the cable company setup on 2 of
the computers (3rd is notebook and isn't always hooked up) and I use a
software firewall on all the computers that allows unrestricted LAN use and
internet use as needed. I don't think using a switch and multiple IPs is
that big of a deal. I decided to go this route since I have a N4 server on
this connection as a backup to our primary server and for fun runs and what
have you. This did away for the need for all the "port forwarding" and all
that other that good stuff that comes with running online games through a
router.

I would suggest a switch not a hub if you don't get a router. I ran a 10/100
hub for the longest until I tested the actual bandwidth, ugh.

Sheesh...that means I may have to interview myself someday...   ;]

Good idea!  Can I count on you for one?  ;]

Cheers!

Re DMZ you make a valid point, which is why I don't enable that myself.
It's an easy solution for many people though, and that's the value.  If you
do a little research, for the games that require it, you *can* enable (open)
specific TCP ports - and while a little more difficult to setup (mostly just
to find out what port needs to be opened), it does limit the potential
liability of opening your home LAN to the Internet.

Re DHCP, you also make a valid statement - and the point is I assume you're
referring to the usual DHCP issues.   I use it mostly for the added
challenge ;)  Static IP management on a home LAN of my size (5 nodes) is
ridiculously easy and bullet-proof, but I still choose to run DHCP just so I
can troubleshoot things once in a while...
