NASCAR and other sim Controls

I have recently bought NASCAR on CD in the UK.  I am finding it VERY hard
to drive - and I think its because I'm using the keyboard to steer.
It does not appear possible to "hold" the current amount of steering lock,
so it means I keep having to tap on/off the Left/Right key.

On other sims I have not found this too much of a problem (eg F1GP).
The best one for this was "Revs" (a Formula 3 sim originally on the BBC
Micro - also by the same chap who did F1GP).  Rev allowed you to hold the
current lock by pressing opposite steer key.  For example, you'd press and
hold LEFT until you had the correct lock, then hold RIGHT to to keep that
lock.  You could then release RIGHT to add more LEFT lock, or release LEFT
to add more LEFT lock.  This worked very well.

I have never been a fan of joysticks, but am begining to think that I should
get one in order to enjoy NASCAR to the full.  Can anybody recommend a
good stick please?

Two other ***s...

1  Is a new version of F1GP still on the cards?
2  My PC is a based on an IBM Blue Lightning 75mhz board.  It has a VLB svga
card, and 16m or ram.  It still seems to be dog-slow when running
NASCAR.  I basically have to switch EVERYTHING off in order to get
a decent refresh rate.  Is there something I'm missing here, or does
the game REALLY put such a high load on cpu ?

The down force of an F1 or an IndyCar is roughly 3-4,000 pounds.  The
down force on a NASCAR is about 350 pounds.  Papyrus doesnot recommend
the sim be driven with anything less than a wheel an pedal setup.  I have
heard of some who have flight controllers that work.

I personally had an ACP-Auto Racing***pit from Simulation Systems.  It
is set up like a Mclaren F1.  It is free standing.

He he he. Ah another revs fan from the past! Yep, that is what
started me off. Geoff Crammond has been my hero ever since. He
also wrote the Spitfire sim for the Beeb.

The keyboard steering was well implemented but I ended up making a
wheel for Revs as I have done for IndyCar. With simulators of such
quality it is a crime IMO to be content with using the keyboard.

A joystick for IndyCar is not great and I assume that Nascar is a
bit better after trying the demo but not a lot. Again a wheel is
so much better. One of the main advantages apart from precise
steering control is separating the accelerator and brake so that
these do not influence the steering in any way.

Yup, spring / summer 95 if we are lucky.

This is the main reason I won't buy Nascar. I have upgraded my
computer to handle IndyCar and this comes along. I refuse to get a
Pentium just to chase the next piece of software. It seems there is
nothing at the moment that will run Nascar in SVGA with everything
enabled at its full frame rate.
