Indycar FAQ: Call for add

by Peter Ra » Wed, 26 Apr 1995 04:00:00

Ok everyone, its time to make a Real FAQ for Indycar Racing from
Papyrus. I saw the FAQ for the Formula 1 World Circuit simulator
and thought it was done quite well. But we need one for Indycar and
NASCAR racing. After reading this group for a year now, I know some of
us are getting sick of questions like where can I get this file or
that file. So I'm putting together a FAQ for Indycar Racing. I have
saved hundreds of messages over the past year, and have a good start
on the FAQ, BUT I need help. Its a bigger task than I thought it would
be.

What follows is a list of Questions. I need some of you to pick 1
or 2 that you can answer. First Email me direct and let me know what
question(s) you would like to answer and edit. Next I will Email you
what I have already on that question. You can add to,edit and verify
your answer then Email them back to me directly. I will place your
answers in the FAQ, then post it to this group when it is finished.
I also need suggestions on stuff I may have left out.

Please don't use rec.auto.simulators to send me mail.
Email me direct at  peter.r...@canrem.com

Your name will be added to the list on the FAQ if you contribute.

And to everyone else, give us at least 6 weeks to get the first version
posted to this group. Also I have a start on a NASCAR FAQ but I thought
someone else could put it together. I'll Email you what I have already
if you are interested in putting it together.

Indycar FAQ: Call for add

by Peter Burk » Thu, 27 Apr 1995 04:00:00

:Ok everyone, its time to make a Real FAQ for Indycar Racing from

:and thought it was done quite well. But we need one for Indycar and
:NASCAR racing. After reading this group for a year now, I know some of
:us are getting sick of questions like where can I get this file or
:that file.

Apparently you haven't been around here long enough to pick up that
the main sources of information are not this newsgroup, but some
ftp sites, mailing lists and web sites.

Indycar is all one-stop shopping at didnt.doit.wisc.edu - and all
the info that is available on Indycar is available there, including
a basic FAQ, and tons of stuff that should answer most of the questions
below. There is a major FTP site, a web site, a mailing list, and
links and info on all other such sites.

:                       Indycar Racing by Papyrus FAQ:

:2.0 The Garage:
:  2.01         Could someone explain the the difference the available
:            Engines and Chassis?

info available at didnt.doit.wisc.edu

: 2.1   Does Fuel load affect how fast I can go?
:
: d'uh! who are you writing this for? Takes about 2 laps to figure that
: one out!
:
: 2.2   How do I go about setting up my Tires?
: 2.21          What effect does Tire temperature have on the car?
: 2.22          Does Tire pressure affect speed and Tire running
:     temperature?
: 2.23          What is stagger and how do I set it up?
:2.3    How should I set my wings for the different tracks?
:2.4    Could you explain how camber effects my car?
:2.5    How should I set steering lock on ovals and road tracks?
: 2.51          What's the difference between linear and non-linear
:       steering?
:2.511                  How should I set it for my Joy stick? or my Wheel?
:2.6    How should I set my shocks?
:2.7    How do I figure my Gear Ratios for the different tracks?

RTFM - unless you want to write a replacement manual for pirated
copies of ICR.

:3.0 Driving Tips:

The questions here are all again answered by driving two or three laps...

:4.0 The Tracks:
:  4.001        How come when I ask about car setups in the rec.auto.simulators

:        hardly anyone responds to my question?

Yes - why is that? ;-)

: 4.01  Australia: (Surfers Paradise)
:  4.011                Do you have any tips on setup for Australia?
:  4.012                Do you have any tips on driving Australia?
etc...

Hope you get the input for all of that, but to save yourself some time
gathering all this stuff, maybe take a look at didnt.doit.wisc.edu
under http://didnt.doit.wisc.edu/Peter/default.html  that site (although
not running all the time and right now very experimental) supports the
IICC racing series, but if you dig into the content, you will get in
depth info on tracks, cornering speeds, setup strategy, driving hints,
sample replays of internet record laps, you name it. This stuff is all
available by track under the IICC Records button. We don't have this for
all tracks, but where available, you can get loads of information.
You won't find irrelevant info like "do you use auto-braking" in these
areas, because it was written by experts for other experts, not for
new users.

info mostly available at didnt.doit's ftp server.

RTFM

where do you think???

d'uh!

RTFM

??? that questions is a bit misleading... You proabably want to see
your own name and paint job...

maybe that's all you want to do - and save yourself a lot of trouble - the
info is out there, why repeat everything? People don't answer most
of these questions in r.a.simulators because they are sick of repeating
what's already out there.

not at didnt.doit.wisc.edu, just in case people now come
looking for it. I have the crack, but I refuse to make it
available to the public, since the one I have does not
require any passords after install. The binary hack that
repeats the same password every time is ok, but such a pain
to install that I don't even have the info anymore.

 see above

RTFM

RTFM

ftp.world.com/vendors/papyrus  and bring a dust cloth ;-)

nope

nope

see above...

see above

see above - lots of links, ftp-able pics, info etc. There are
also some mailing lists that are pretty active.

good call - somebody should write the lowdown on that stuff, especailly
the wheels. One thing is clear: you don't need a wheel to be fast: most
of the top internet drivers use a joystick.

not likely, unless your stick is crap.

ask PC magazine

for replay length only

waht you paid for...

Just buy one!

no

isn't that a bit off the Papyrus Indycar subject in itself? That
could be saved as a separate FAQ for any driving sim.
