N3 Demo- not worth the wait.

I don't know about the disarray part, but I think we'd all like it...
yesterday. The video and screenshots were lackluster. But hey, GPL can
certainly tide me over plenty :-) until it arrives! Because, for me
anyway, N3 will be a terrific change of pace (Bristol is a HOOT), but
GPL will still rule my PC.

I knew that- what I meant was fee-less personal-server TCP/IP
multiplayer, a la Quake2. I've no interest in paying fees to race, and
from what I've experienced online with the personal-server TCP/IP
format GPL was able to achieve, I won't need to pay anyone- so long as
the companies don't get greedy and decide they don't want to put such
free multiplayer in.

I know we're not supposed to be Quake2 fans here in the sim group...
right?!?! But I do have to congratulate Id for showing the ***
industry on large scale that giving the users freedom develops a user
base that more than makes up for any percieved holes in profit. They
did this first with their shareware, no-conditions "here's 2 weeks of
fun for free" policy with Doom. Then they did it with the astonishing
amount of user-configurability of Quake, then Quake2. And also with
Quake and Quake2, they set the standard for online *free* and
unlimited growth *** over the internet. I think they set the stage
that we'e now able to race on! Hell, then they even gave away for free
the source code for their old hits. They are amazing. *And they are
rich now*. Great lesson.

ANyay, as I understand, Papy wasn't greedy- they just didn't think
they could achieve good racing with the bandwidth available over the
net. Turns out they did a great job, for a start. I never use GPL
off-line, these days!

Hey, no one says you can't like more than one game! :-) Or genre. Id is
cool and I think people can learn from that. Papy included. Look at the
products that do things this way... Id's and Linux. People go nuts over
the stuff because of it... the openness. And isn't that the best thing
for everyone, to have fun and use it?

First of all what do you know if it's no where close ? Did you know it was
presented at Planet Hollywood in Orlando during the Sierra Sports preview
night.  That it was raced by (I think Shawn Wise) and was racing without a
problem ? The tracks they demonstrated were Dover, the Glen and Loudon.  The
only thing that wasn't in it was that the 3d head movement "a la GPL" wasn't
implemented yet and the***pit (even if it's in 3d) wasn't moving or
finished.

Let's compare GPL to N3 Larry here.
---------------
GPL first release date : X-mas 97  (appeared on the GNS Expansion pack demo
I think)
Nascar Racing 2 first release date : X-mas 98
GPL pushed release to : Spring of 98
Nascar 3 pushed release to : Spring of 99
GPL demo release : End of March 98 (not 100% sure)
Nascar 3 demo release : I heard an exclusive magazine demo before the summer
GPL release date : Fall of 98
Nascar 3 release date : Fall of 99
---------------

Didn't you learned from that Larry ?

What's funny is that the only reason I got back in to Q2 (I quit about
5 months ago, started again a few weeks ago) was because 3/4ths of the
time I launch VROC, there isn't a pending race I can join yet. So in
the interum I play CTF Q2! Gamespy makes it incredibly easy.

Now, if I can just figure out a way to play Q2 with my wheel in front
of me, I'm golden!

Yeah, after jumping the guard rails in GPL for the third time in 10 minutes
it's very helpfull to frag a few... ;^)

Your post gave me another idea: After installing Linux on my Internet
PC the first thing I did was play around with the dedicated Q2 server
for Linux. Besides the amazing configuration possibilities it lets you
remove a lot of overhead from your client PC, namely bots AI. Running
those guys on your client cuts drastically into the frame rate. NOW
the idea: Imagine having a dedicated GPL server handling 20 AI drivers!!
As the overhead of network communication is a lot less than the AI,
this could really improve your frame rate... Oh my, does Papy know Linux?
