Technical glitch, or am I just not a good driver?

I recently purchased N3, having played both previous installments until my
fingers bled (no N99, though).  In both N1 and N2 I was able to race
competitively and sometimes win at 99% skill and 50% race length.  I was
able to hold my line in traffic, and generally avoid accidents.  The ratio
of accidents caused by the AI versus ones caused by me was probably ten to
one.

Now N3 comes along, though, and all of the sudden I'm driving like a
three-year old in a theme park bumper car.  What gives?

I cannot seem to hold my line well.  My car often seems horribly tight
entering turns and very loose coming out of them, regardless of how I tinker
with my setup.  At 98% I can usually qualify top 10, but never on the pole.
I'm usually a little quicker than the AI for the first few laps until the
tires heat up, and then the AI cars are too fast for me.  At 98 freakin'
percent!

In general, I'm using a tweaked version of the ACE setup for each track.
PII / 333, 128 SDRAM, AGP TNT w/ 16mb, full install, TM Grand Prix I, D3D
joystick driver, 800 x 600, 12 cars drawn in front, 3 behind, all detail at
max except replay & skid buffers and drawing distance, 16 bit sound w/ 4
cars heard max.

Is there something technical wrong, or am I just not a good driver in these
days of higher speeds than N2 ?!

I found N3 easier to drive than N2. Then again it could also be all that GPL
time paying off!

Have you tried using the papyrus driver? I have found that the DX joy
driver doesnt work well at all in Nascar3 for me.
