I just getting 16 fps in SVGA with recommend mode. My system is P5/100, 16M ram
(not EDO), without Pipeline, S3 968 S430 2M display.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One of my friends getting 17.5 fps in SVGA with mostly all graphic on including
the mirror (only except the "SKY" button), His system is P5/166, 64M EDO, 512K
Pipeline, S3 Trio 64 V+ 2M display.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Very happy to see this topic. Because all of my friends here in Hong Kong are
willing to upgrade their machines, enabling to play this game with all graphic
on! Please try to inform the ultimate setup which can run more than 20fps in
SVGA with most graphic on?

BTW, Which graphic card can speed up the fps rate in GP2?
( Is the S3 Trio 64 better than Millennim MGA? How about 3D accelerator?)

Looking for your valuable comment.

Best regards,
Ray Fung

I don't think it even supports any 2D accelerators. Since the game is
forced to use standard VGA or VESA instructions (unlike windows drivers)
advanced GFX accelerator hardware is useless. Fast video mem and a fast
bus should make a big difference though (I guess).

Microprose themselves (via e-mail) told me that the ATI Mach 64 was no
good for GP2. They recommended any of the new cards by Diamond or
Matrox. My guess is, though, that the video card is not going to make
a great deal of difference. A big boost in processor power probably
will.
Just in passing, make sure, if you are not already doing this, that
you set the actual frame-rate a couple of clicks below the estimated
rate. This really does improve things. Any frame-rate of 15 or over is
pretty good and if the program says it will run at 17 or 18 then set
it at 15.
Cheers,
Andrew

Undoubtedly the best setup is a Pentium Pro 200 with Intel Natoma chipset (440 FX). I run with all details
and objects on in the forward view except sky, and smoke in the mirrors, and it is super smooth at 18.2
fps (eg, I can get an occupancy of 50% on some tracks during a race). At the start of the quick race
(ie, Italy, position 6, before the light goes green) with these details the occupancy is 92%. My machine
also does 81.1 on Chris Dial's 3D bench.

However, if you are going to get a Pentium Pro you probably should avoid the matrox millenium as apparently
it is incompatible with FASTVID using the banked VGA write combining feature. Therefore, a fix needs to be
applied which slows down its speed. I use a Hercules Stingray 64/Video successfully with the banked VGA
mechanism and it is also possibly a bit faster than a Matrox. Alternatively, the new ET6000 chipset (eg,
Hercules Dynamite 128) is supposed to be faster, but you will have to find out from someone else if it
can enable the banked VGA write combining successfully without the slow down.

Why don't you try Monaco from the last position? At the start of the race
and into the 1st corner, chek your processor occupancy. I'd be interested
to see which textures you had to turn off in order to stay under 100% PO or
close to it.

This is not entirely true. If you disable the USWC Write Posting (or
Combining?), fastvid works on a Millenium. It seems that if you don't,
you'll get a system hang when the game tries to access your sound card
using the DMA channels. Chris' 3D benchmark gives me 77.9.
