Round tires?

>So why do Yanks spell it "tires" when they say "taares"?

Sounds like you are referring to the Southern US pronunciation of the word.
Rest assured that people from the Southern US don't cotton to being called
"Yanks" since that is short for "Yankees", who are people from the Northern
US, specifically the NorthEast.  Those are the same folks the Southerners
tried unsuccessfully to beat during the American Civil war.

Even in the NorthEast US, where I am, there will be a disparity in the way
the word is pronouced.  People in Boston might say "tiyahs" where folks from
the other end of the same state (Massachusetts) will say it correctly
(according to a dictionary, anyway.)

In Maine we call them tiyahs, in Boston they call them "stolen"  :)
