I'm wondering if VRAM will make that much of a difference.  Anyone out there know?

What the heel are you doing here with all these petrol heads, Papa?
Get back to c.s.i.p.g.flight-sim on the double!

Hope your having as much fun with GP2 as I am. Makes a nice change from
EF2000, but I still seem to lawndart into the railings a lot :)

I have an S3 Trio 64 with 1mb DRAM (and a P100)

Can anyone tell me if there is any frame rate benefit in GP2 if I upgrade
to 2mb DRAM?

Thanks

hehe I was a motorhead long before I was traitor<G>. Actually bought
my first puter for driving AUTO SIMS. Silly me thought GP2 was
actually going to come out 2 years ago.<VBG>

He he :-) You spoke out, what I thought long time before.

Have a nice flight with EF2000 and Apatche.

I Haven't picked up GP2 yet (finals coming up), but I've noticed that
there seems to be a performance issue with ATI Mach64 cards
(unfortunately, like mine). I don't want to shell out any major sum on a
new card just yet, not until things become more clear on the 3d card
front, so no Matrox or Hercules for me. However, will a cheap S3 Trio64
2mb DRAM give me better performance in GP2? All of this is on a p150
overclocked to 166 (and counting), 256k pipeline and 16mb EDO, running
in WIN95 DOS mode.

Actually... (now this is what I heard, I don't know for sure) with S3
chipset based cards, they are much faster with 2mb than 1mb. This is
because they are 64bit cards and can only run at 32bit with 1meg.. a
bit like the Pentium and SIMMs if you like (though Pentiums don't run
at all with 1 SIMM). If you add another 1mb to an S3 card to make it
up to 2mb then I heard you can about double the speed of the card.

Is this true in Windows and DOS, or just in windows (as I suspect)

None whatsoever.

The gp2 log:on score is the same with 1Mb as it is with 2Mb.  The
frame rates are the same, the extra memory makes no difference.

My video speed was 329 with both 1 & 2Mb (S3 Trio 64), for a 35 quid
card, this aint bad at all.

All as extra memory i'll give you, is more colours under Windows.

My PCI Mach64 with 2MB DRAM gets a low score (70) from GP2 when reported
in the log, this on a P120. However I can run SVGA with track, kerb,
trackside object textures (low detail) & smoke. When setting the detail
GP2 reports an expected 19.1fps, if I select 17fps the game runs pretty
smooth, with occupancy between 75-100% most of the time.

I suspect that the MACH64 is giving wierd results on the log, this could
be due to the way the clock is set on the MACH64. The other possibility
is that video performance is not much of an issue in terms of the
numbers reported in the log.

In other words, don't throw your card away on the basis of this figure,
try it out first and see how it actually drives.
