Never run DMA???

by Brian Ruis » Fri, 10 Jan 1997 04:00:00

Is it true that I will never be able to run the DMA version on my Cyrix
6x86 166.  Sierra sent me an email saying that the Cyrix chip doesn't
support DMA bus-mastering(or something like that).  What is the deal?
Thanks.

I'm not expert, though I play one on usenet.  Sounds like Sierra tech
doesn't know what they talk of.  First it's not the CPU which handles
DMA bus-mastering, but the supporting chipset.  It will depend on your
motherboard.  Now some of the earlier ports to Rendition did have
trouble with the Cyrix chip.  There is a patch available for ICR2 and
the Cyrix.

Then again I could be wrong & if so will gladly step aside and let a
real expert clear this up...
