Which to buy: Papyrus' ICR or NASCAR?

by Bob Hu » Sat, 17 Jun 1995 04:00:00

first let me say that i just found this newsgroup, so if this has already
been discussed in depth *i missed it*.  sorry.

i currently have microprose's 1993 "world circuit", which i like but don't
find realistic enough.  i drive away from way too many "nudges" and "wall
intersections" without any (apparent) damage at all.  plus, and i still
don't get this, fuel is completely omitted from the game.

in real life i am a fan of the indianapolis 500 and don't really follow
NASCAR at all.  in game life, NASCAR seems to be getting better reviews
and it's on CD.

so, which do you like better?  please email me since such comments are
only useful to a select few.  if anyone wants to see the responses i get
(hopefully i'll get a few), let me know.

thanks!

ps: anyone in seattle want to race?

I agree... while I personally prefer Indycar quite a bit to NASCAR, the
fact is that NASCAR has plenty of racing action and is actually more fun
during a two-player modem-connected race than Indycar IMHO.  NASCAR is also
going to have the dial-in network capability pretty soon too.  The reason
I don't like it as much as ICR is that the cars handle like trucks in
comparison!

My recommendation, however, would be to get NASCAR along with the
track pack now, and then get Indycar 2.0 when it comes out (some time
before Christmas hopefully).  If you're really a dedicated racing fan
and can afford it, I would also suggest getting Indycar and the add-on
packs - ICR is truly the best racing game I've ever played, though I
have my fingers crossed that Indycar 2.0 will eclipse that record.

: i currently have microprose's 1993 "world circuit", which i like but don't
: find realistic enough.  i drive away from way too many "nudges" and "wall
: intersections" without any (apparent) damage at all.

I'd recommend Indycar.  Driving a NASCAR is very different from either
an Indycar or an F1 car.  Partially due to the inherent differences between
open-wheel and closed wheel racing, mainly due to weight and downforce
(personal opinion).

: plus, and i still
: don't get this, fuel is completely omitted from the game.

If you mean refueling, there was none in 1989 when this game was modeled.
If you mean the weight of the car changing over the race, you're right.

: in real life i am a fan of the indianapolis 500 and don't really follow
: NASCAR at all.  in game life, NASCAR seems to be getting better reviews
: and it's on CD.

The CD is mainly a distribution medium (like a big read-only floppy), and
does not add much to the game except 2 songs.

: so, which do you like better?  please email me since such comments are
: only useful to a select few.  if anyone wants to see the responses i get
: (hopefully i'll get a few), let me know.

NASCAR is slicker, has some features missing in IndyCar, and has a SVGA
mode (great to show off the new Pentium :-)).

If you don't like NASCAR, I doubt you'll like simulating them - I don't!
Buy the game that simulates the find of racing you want to do.
