Howdy!!

A friend of mine, who doesn't have access to the net, has just bought
himself a 486DX2-50. He also bought ICR V1.01 with it. The game installed
Ok, but when it came to loading the game, it would only run through the
intro at the start (the cars driving down the track) for about a second
before it would crash, and the screen would go up the fritz.
Amongst the jibberish could be read things about granules, and the pathname
for the Toronto track.
We took the computer and the game down to the local computer store, where
the problem replicated itself. We tried it on two other computers (a
486SX-33 and a 486DX2-66, deleting it each time we finished) and on both
these machines it worked perfectly. Neither of these machines were fitted
with sound cards, and my friends DX2-50 doesn't either.
I was just wondering if any of you out there in netland had any idea what
could be wrong.

Thanks,

Cameron..

I'm not sure what the problem is exactly, but here are a few suggestion
that may (or may not make it run smoother).  By all means get a hold of
the most recent patch (1.05 I think).  While IndyCar will run with 4 megs,
it can be a little undependable even on a fast machine [I have the same
kind].  The game positively loves 8 megs and trash your EMS (if you're
using any) and most TSRs.  XMS and a fairly clean autoexec.bat and
config.sys have cleared up most problems for me.  Hope this is at least a
little help.  I'm new in Netland myself.

Howdieee!

How much ram do you have?  ICR needs atleast 4 megs to run.  Also if you
are running DOS 6.0 or later, use the F8 at start up, and load only
Himen, DOS=umb, and DOS=high.

There is a ICR1.04 update, in various versions (e=european, etc) available
from two ftp sites.
                                ftp.std.com/pub/vendors/papyrus

and
                                ftp.didnt.doit.wisc.edu

Also if you have access to Mosaic or Lynx you can use the following:

                                ftp://ftp.std.com/pub/vendors/papyrus

Good luck

Jack

         ^^^^^^^
DOS=UMB is only relevant if EMM386.EXE is loaded.

Since ICR uses the Rational Systems DOS extender, no memory
manager is required. So just press F5 at start-up.

Mike

I have had the exact same problem. I have indy v1.05, and run a 386dx40 w/ 4
megs & SBPro. I had the game running fine on my previous motherboard, also a
386dx40, but after installing the new one, the games randomly crashes, send my
BIOS header to the screen, and dumps a bunch of other info to the screen in
40x25 mode. *shrug* If anyone has been able to _solve_ this problem, I'd like
to know.

Thanks,
            Andy.

as far as i know, the memory manager Dos/4gw -runs Indycar,
Doom, etc..- has compatibility problems with Opti chipset boards, these
are the boards that usually have an AMD CPU in them.
When you run Indycar or Doom -depending on the Dos/4gw version-
you may get errors such as the machine freezing, or 'granule'/'internal
stack' errors.
Solution, well as i had a AMD 386dx40 Opti board, i simply
upgraded to a 486/33 board.

        cheers  John.

I've run ICR and DOOM, and Rebel *** (it also uses the DOS/4GW extender)
on my computer and my motherboard has an Opti chipset? I'v also run all
but Rebel *** on an AMD CPU at work (shh, don't tell!!). So I don't
think that's it. Just my $.02 from my experience!

Howdy once again!!

I followed the suggestion of pressing F5 and F8, but the game still crashed.
So, I headed off to ftp.std.com for version 1.04.
After saving it to disk, I drove straight from uni to my friends place to
try it.
WE saved it under the name of indycar4, to differentiate it from the
original exectuable.
On booting the game from the boot disk, we found that the intro of the cars
driving around Toronto worked perfectly, but when it came to the manual
protection, the troubles started.
Words could be typed in fine, but even though we had entered the correct
word, it would tell us to try again. To make matters worse, it would even
ask for pages that had nothing but pictures or captions that don't form
part of the main text.
As before, any help here would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Cameron..

Since the manual protection is where it craps out, try using the crack
for it. I've never used it yet, but someone who has can probably email
you the one password that it always asks for if you still can't get it
to work. Good Luck, hope it works.
Here is the crack for version 1.04.........

andy (and others), see my post 1396 about this problem, it is to do with
incompatibility with the motherboard that uses a Opti chipset.

Cameron:

You probably have 1.04e or something.  THat'll***up your manual
protection because the manuals are different in different countries.  Try
getting another version of 1.04.

Hope this helps!

This is a problem when you obtain the wrong upgrade file.  If using the
American version of the original you need to use the 1.04 patch, for
European English version use the 1.04e patch, for the Spanish version use
the 1.04s patch, etc.

Hope this helps,

Rob

Hmm Papyrus have two versions the US and the European, you need the 1.04E
which has the right codes for the Australian release.
