I vote for sports cars AND GP cars of the era... after all, drivers like
Gurney, Hill, Siffert, Rodriguez, and just about everyone else drove
sports cars and GP cars on the same tracks in the same season(s), they
were VERY busy gents -- not like the nancy-boys driving in F1 these days...

nope nobody is doing it because editing GPL is not easy like SCGT. You
may have noticed something like 100+ tracks for GPL but no mods. Your best
bet would be either the dozen or so mods for
nascar Heat or wait til WSC comes out

There's a nice P4 for Racer; check the 2nd thumbnail image on the
Racer opening page.
I wouldn't say GPL has the graphics potential to invest into something
like this, although the physics and networking ofcourse surely are one
of the best.

Ofcourse, for a Racer mod there's still too much missing (AI, lol, and
a modestly working networking model).
