Toca Race Driver 2 & CMR 4 - PC or XBOX?

by Jay » Sun, 18 Apr 2004 06:11:30

Since Codemasters has come out with Toca Race Driver and Colin McRae
Rally 4  for both the XBOX and the PC, I have to ask... which version
is better?

Quite frankly, I prefer to buy racing games for the PC as I have a
racing wheel,(Logitech Wingman Formula Force) but I only have the
standard gamepad with my consoles (XBOX and PS2) furthermore the
graphics, sound and whatnot are usually much better on a PC than a
console.

However.....

It seems most titles that have come out in the last few years have
been written for one console or another (XBOX vs. PS2) then "ported"
over to run on the PC and other types of consoles.

Invariably the "ported" versions aren't as good as the original
version written for a specific platform (console or PC).

I've heard lots of horror stores about the car
control/handling/physicis of Codemasters racing games for PC racing
wheels and have had bad experiences with the last Toca Race driver and
Colin McRae games for the pc which is making me now consider buying
them for the XBOX (or PS2) or perhaps skipping them all together and
waiting for better games to come out, or for these to hit the bargin
bin's in a few months time.

In any case, can anyone who has tried Toca Race Driver 2 and/or CMR4
on both the Xbox with gamepad control, vs. the PC with steering wheel
control, provide a little feedback about their experience?

Which would you buy given the option (XBOX or PC) version?

I'm sure that there are many here who have been bitten by Codies in
the past and are now shy about purchacing their titles until they hear
more objective feedback of fans and the public at large who have tried
them out, I know I count myself one of them. Still CMR4 for only $20
as a new release for the XBOX does make that title tempting...

For those in the know, and are willing to share their opinions....
Thanks in advance!

I have not played the PC game, only the demo, which did not have a complete
tire model.  So I can't compare the two, but I will say my reasons for
buying the Xbox version instead of the PC version is that it still seems a
bit arcadey to me (though not as much as the first one), plus I know I will
be able to find races on Xbox Live.  Not sure how much multiplayer will be
available for the PC version.

I tried playing CMR4 on PC with my wheel and it felt ridiculous no matter
what settings I used.  You won't lose anything by playing them with a
gamepad.  I'd normally recommend PC for most games but these are an
exception - go Xbox for these Codies games.

The steering in Race Driver 2 is a nightmare - almost impossible to
keep it in a straight line on any of the courses....is it just me or
is this a universal problem...

Andy....to be honest I was the same as you and so were many of my online
racing buddies, but a little messing about in the settings especially the
Advanced ones made it firstly acceptable but then subsequently excellent.

I use an Act Labs set up and it is perfect and so precise with this game.

My mates use Momo's,BRD and Logitech FF and finally with alot of tips and
aid we all say that the steering is very good, quite the opposite of two
weeks ago.

It is there for you if you make the right setting choices.
