GPL - my first mad accident

After all this time and I just experienced the GPL engine going bananas
during an accident.  Are they weird or what.  Hehe.

I know people have mentioned these before, but they are so wild when
they happen that you gotta tell everyone about it.  So allow me to
indulge myself a little. :)

I was doing a 20 or so lap race at Silverstone against the AI when, with
about 10 laps left, my engine started coughing and I realised that I
probably hadn't put enough fuel in the damn thing.   And I was enjoying
this too.  Bollocks!!

So, knowing that my race was done, and with the back of a Ferrari just
looking way too tempting, I decided to plough into the *** whilst he
was doing his usual braking for Woodcot.

Well I didn't quite catch him square on - more of a glancing blow really
- and my Lotus then slid off stage left and headed for the wall with a
bumph.  Next thing and... what the f**?  Everything is spinning like
crazy.  What's going on?  Is this some kind of injury simulation code
that has just kicked in?  Whoa, I'm getting dizzy.  Mmm, time to check
out the replay.

Well, it turns out that a split second after I hit the wall along comes
that Ferrari and harpoons me and I'm gone, straight up and spinning nose
over tail like some giant Catherine-wheel.  I counted em, 53 spins over
a 10 second period during which time I even came down, bounced nose
first on the pit-lane wall and carried on for a few spins more before
ending up just beyond my pit bay where my crew were ready to check the
car over.  'Mmm, no wheels mate and you're engine's in pieces.  Apart
from that the car looks in good shape.  Still, better call it a day on
this one.  What happened?'

'It was that bastard Bandini.  He definitely braked too early...' :)

No person's opinions can be said to be
more correct than another's, because each is
the sole judge of his or her own experience.

LOL!!!

Look here to see the new graphic on the rear of the BMW/Williams:

they should add a "Slower traffic move right (or left as the case may be)"
graphic to the front :-)

Yep, that's a killer. I wonder if Bruce M. Johnson could add that to
his Lotus 49 for Monza online races.

A similar thing happened to me, in a softer version, but I was training
alone on Monza. I went in a wild uncontrolled spin into the first dead end
on the right, short after the finish line. As soon as I hit the wall, the
car took off *vertically*, spun like crazy a few dozen times and eventually
came down to the floor, resting on its four wheels...I had car damage turned
off :-)

It is related to the way the physics of circular motion are coded into the
game...err...simulation.

You see, cars in GPL are modelled as rigid bodies, in the sense that they
break apart in pieces, but never suffer plastic deformation upon a
collision. If that were the case, a lot of energy released in the collision
would be absorbed by the deformation and the car would not bounce that way.
This might have been really tough to programme and would not pay the extra
resources required.

It's lots of fun though, except during a race!
