GPL Starting Grid Question

by Tony Borro » Tue, 05 Jan 1999 04:00:00

Hi,

A while back, someone posted a way to get in and rearrange the starting grid
in GPL. Essentially, inverting the grid, so guys like Clark, Hill, Gurney
etc. are at the back, and the also ran hacks (like me) are towards the
front. This helps if you run against, say, 15 opponents; you're running
against the 15 worst, rather than the 15 best.

I know that there are ways to get in and play with the over all strength of
the AI drivers (per Alison Hine's site on this), but as I recall, this guy
had a way of doing it in a much simpler fashion.

For the life of my I can't find the post anywhere, so if someone knows how
to do this (or, perchance, has a copy of the original post), thanks in
advance.

On another note entirely ...

There was another thread recently about how playing GPL kind of ruined a
persons ability to play other sims.

I didn't find this to be the case at all. I found the opposite to be true.

After slogging around Monza for days, I hopped back into GP2 and I was just
passing people at will. I think that GPL, in addition to being a really well
executed sim, is a great trainer for other driving sims as well.

OK, I'll stop now.

Well maybe, I haven't tried rearranging the order but the AI Tweaker makes it
very easy to adjust a variety of parameters for the ai cars. Get it at the Apex
files section.

   It doesn't invert the grid per se (Clark will still be fastest and
up front), but he will be the last driver you select (he wouldn't be
racing in 18 or fewer AI races).  Here you go...

:>I know this has been posted before, but I couldn't find it. Could
:>someone tell me how to edit the setting files to race against the
:>tail-end of the AI field rather than Hill, Clarke, Gurney etc - I'm
:>afraid I'm just not in their league.
:
:   I've done this myself.  It has the benefit of allowing you to
:add AI at your skill level as your skills increase, just by
:increasing AI field size within the game.  Here's how...
:
:* Copy your DRIVER.INI file and Paste it with a different filename
:  (ie: DRIVER00.INI).
:* Edit (Notepad is fine) DRIVER.INI as follows:
:       * each driver has a [DRIVER_XX] header
:       * this is the order which the game selects the AI
:       * go through the file and change the numbers as follows:
:               DRIVER_1   -->  DRIVER_19
:               DRIVER_2   -->  DRIVER_18
:                   :               :
:                   :               :
:               DRIVER_18  -->  DRIVER_2
:               DRIVER_19  -->  DRIVER_1
:       * save the editted DRIVER.INI file
:* If you want to switch back, restore your original DRIVER.INI file.

   Actually, I don't think it has truly ruined their skills (quite the
contrary as you point out), but more that other sims seem to pale in
comparison to the stunning magnificence of GPL, thus "ruining" other
sims for that person.

   I got MS C:PR the day before GPL (at $20 minus a $20 rebate :), and
I have yet to spend more than three days on it.  I've been meaning to
test the online play of C:PR, but I just don't have much interest in
it after playing GPL.

"But in a way, fear is a big part of racing, because if there was
nothing to be frightened of, and no limit, any fool could get into
a motor car and racing would not exist as a sport." -- Jim Clark
