I totally agree.  And, these grids will help your starting line framerate!!
The extra space and control you get with the better FPS helps a lot.

With a PII450, 128 MB, full field, all graphics on except for mirrors (cars
& track, no textures), detail bias at 25%, Voodoo2 12 MB, my start line FPS
went from about 24-26 to 34-36!!
