GP2: Cyrix P166+ performance?

by Alan Hea » Thu, 31 Oct 1996 04:00:00

Hi,

Anyone running GP2 with this processor? How does it compare to an Intel
processor? Does the well publicised FPU problem rear its head with this
game? Some comparative benchmarks would be appreciated. I'm intending
getting a Mystique as well.

GP2: Cyrix P166+ performance?

Can't speak for the P166+, but as for the Mystique...I have had problems with
that board and GP2.  I believe it is associated with VGA-SVGA switching (like
in the intro -> opening menu), and have gotten around it sort of by using the
"nointro" option...yet I still get pallette problems on occasion (polygon
fills in the road that are green, washed out colors on menu screens) that I
feel are associated with the Mystique.  I didn't have these problems with my
old Diamond Stealth; however, I changed the entire computer at the time of
adding the Mystique, so I can't pin it down exactly...but it's my gut feeling.

You might want to consider the Dynamite 128/ Video from Hercules (US $189 for
4MB MDRAM 128-bit card).  It's supposed to scream.  In fact, I almost
purchased one, but couldn't justify the additional expense...

GP2: Cyrix P166+ performance?

by CarloSa » Sat, 02 Nov 1996 04:00:00

My friend just purchased a Cyrix P166 with 16MB EDO ram 256Kp/L and a
Diamond stealth 3D 2MB card.
I quickly tried GP2.

Circuit was Italy  SVGA all on apart from sky recommended 17FPS.  This
appeared to be ok but I felt there was some slowdown at the start due to
all the cars (Occupancy about 130 at the start) When track was clear it
was running ok.
I then switched some of the mirror detail off and one or two of the screen
details.
(I did not switch off none of the main details so it still looked great ie
trackside banks etc. I did switch off track though) It then recommended
about 21fps. I ran at 17Fps and it seemed to fly.

Could we please have some more poeple writing in with details of there set
ups and exact occupancys for certain tracks and exact details of hardware
and texture setups.  This group seems to be full of people giving very
sketchy ideas of how ther system runs.  We need very detailed reports so
that we can make direct and accurate comparrisons in a quest to find the
best system for GP2.

When my mate comes over again I will make my account of its performance
very accurate I only had about 10mins to make the above assesment.

Carlo  PS I want to upgrade for GP2 in about 6 months so I am trying to
suss out the best hardware (Not P Pro its too dear)

Almost the same for me, i have a IBM P166+ (suppose to run cooler than
cyrix)
32MB EDO 60nS EDO RAM, 256 PB
But my video card  is Hercules Dynamite 128/VIDEO 2MB MDram (multi-bank
Dram) vertical fresh rate set at 90HZ (default is 60HZ)

Here's my GP2LOG.TXT
Log opened Code Start: 004C8020h

Data End: 009AE2EDh

Environment:
Processor (x86) : 4
Dos Version:00000007h
Running windows 95 or above
Speed>(c.f. DX2-66): 356 (same as above)
Video speed: 446 (faster than Vram,Wram,Dram)
Found VESA version: 00000200h (don't know what it's compared to 00000102h)
Vesa mode is available
Found Vesa R/W windows
Vesa initialized
etc...

hope it's some of help, would like to see an INTEL 166Mhz for SPEED ??
see ya,Eric

Hello, i've got an intel p166 (Its really an 150, but overclocked) with 32MB
60ns EDO RAM, 512kB PB Cache,  and 4MB WRAM Matrox millenium

Speed (c.f. DX2-66): 322 (Slower than P166+)
Video Speed: 498 (Faster than herc dyn 128)
Vesa version: 000000200h

If I overclock to 180 Mhz i get proc. speed at 349, and video speed: 466
(60 Mhz (3x60Mhz=180Mhz) bus speed instead of 66Mhz with 166
(2.5x66Mhz=166Mhz) makes communications with graphics card slower.)

Vesa version 2.0 is probably supported directly by your card, or you may be
running
univbe or something.

I get the following with a P120 clocked to 133mHz with an s3dViRGE running
s3spdup with vesa and vga options enabled...I actually had a speed decrease
using s3spdup and univbe at the same time.

Processor (x86): 5
Dos Version: 00000007h
Running windows 95 or above
Speed (c.f. DX2-66): 260
Video speed: 467         <====This is a 2mb EDO RAM card...
Searching for Vesa Card
Found Vesa Version:00000102h

It runs well in SVGA as long as I set frame rate to ~17fps with sky and
smoke
off.  Smoke slows the game down worse than downgrading to a '286 :)
