Cyrix P166 Chips and Nascar 2

Folks,

I just upgraded from an Pentium 60 to an Cyrix processor, got a good deal as the board and Cyrix chip were
only $295.

E***d as I was to get home and try out the new stuff on the demo of Nascar 2, but only to find out that
the Cyrix chips will not run the demo.

Is this just a bug in the demo version?

This will be fixed when the full version is released RIGHT?

Anybody with any help, comments or suggestions please E-mail me promptly, as there is no since taking up
bandwidth on this subject.

Thanks guys

Mike

If they want your business they will fix it, unless they are paid off by
Intel.

Direct quote from Papyrus' web page:

"... Although the release version of the game will only need 8 megs of
RAM, and run on non-Intel processors (AMD, Cyrix, etc.), this demo
version REQUIRES: Intel Pentium processor, 16MB RAM."

Adam L. from Papyrus posted a message stating that the Cyrix problem was
fixed. Seems like it was just a couple of days after the Nascar2 demo was
released. He also stated that they were not going fix the demo and
re-release it, as it is only a demo. Let them finish the full version which,
by the way, WILL run on the Cyrix.

Speaking of Adam, anyone see/heard from Papyrus lately?  Mighty
quiet.........  Chained in front of Nascar2 code maybe?

If I wanted Cyrix owners business I would most definitely release the
updated version.
Something smells.

What "smells" is your brain.  If you'd use it for something more than just to
fill that void in your skull, it wouldn't be rotting and you'd realize that
it's worth far more to Papy to finish the real sim than to cater to some idiot
alarmist who thinks everybody's out to get him.

Leave Papy alone and let them finish the sim itself (I don't have much faith
in their November delivery date, but that's because I'm a programmer and I
understand that shit happens to postpone a scheduled release).  Then, if you
feel so inclined, you can download the new demo they promised and make up your
mind then.  The demo that is currently available isn't much of a demo IMHO,
and not worth the 8mb download.  Lots of stuff doesn't work (even on the
Pentiums), and it's a well known fact that it doesn't work on Cyrix chips or
in machines with less than 16mb of RAM.  Not only that, but it dcoesn't
showcase the enhancements for the Verite chipset.

I can't comment on the "INTEL World Domination ***", but I believe
Papyrus is gonna get a ton of business from Cyrix owners. Most of them seem
to be chompin at the bit to get the sim now. I don't know if your into
Nascar but I believe even you will buy Nascar2 if you want to own the best
racing Sim ever developed, regardless of whether or not the demo is
re-released. ;-)

Give Papyrus the benefit of the doubt. I think they would have released a
new 'Cyrix' demo if they weren't already behind schedule on the full
version. I'd even bet that they aren't very happy about it. Ok, I'll shut up
on this issue now.

1) The reference to my occupation was merely a side note referencing my
suspicion that they (Papy) wouldn't finish NCR2 by November ya friggin idiot,
and had nothing really to do with your paranoia (the original subject of my
message).

.. and now, back to our show...

2) My "superior programmers mind" would realize (as even a dullard such as
yourself should be able to do) that Papy would have seen more of a monetary
benefit as far as sales go by releasing a sim for the PowerPC rather than for
MS-DOS machines.

3) Go sit back down in the corner and go back to sucking your thumb, and don't
bother the grown-ups any more.

Ok so we all know you're a programmer now.  What masterpiece did you come

Please note that it will NOT work with the DMA enhanced version if
Papy puts one out to take advantage of the Reactor 3D accelerator
card. This will cost you dearly in performance. I have a Reactor card
and the special ICR2. It shipped with two versions: "indysafe" and
"indyfast" . Indyfast runs with direct memory access for the video
card and screams. My Cyrix P166 would not work. No one has a solution.
(Papy or Intergraph). Running the sim in Indysafe mode (no DMA access)
took about a 35% hit in performance.

Result: The Cyrix chip is on the shelf and I coughed up the bucks for
a real P166...

Cyrix P166 Chips and Nascar 2

by Jason Perkin » Tue, 12 Nov 1996 04:00:00

So I got my Reactor on Friday, hurried home and slapped it
into my 686 200+. On Win95 startup, it tried to load the
Microsoft Rendition drivers rather than look at the disk
I had, but after a little bumbling around I got it straight.

So, the scoop on Papyrus Sims...

As has been said, ICR2 will not run in DMA mode. *BUT* this is
*not* a Cyrix problem, nor is it a ICR2 problem. According to
Sierra, indyfast runs just fine on their Rendition card (go
figure), even in Cyrix machines. Anyway, after going back and
forth between the companies, Steve at Intergraph told me that
they already had a TR (trouble report or some such) open for
this problem and their developers were working on it as we
speak. The symptoms are a bunch of garbage colors or a white
line at the top of the screen, followed by an "Illegal Opcode"
register dump. For anyone who's interested, the TR # is
289602743.

Apparently, a fix for some Cyrix machines is as simple as
commenting out the 'RR' line in 'indyfast.bat'. If you have
a Cyrix and ICR2 isn't working, might want to give that a
try. Didn't help me though.

FWIW, IndySafe looks spectacular. It does bog down a bit in
traffic, and I can't stand knowing that it could be better,
but its night and day better than my old original ICR.
