N2: Pure 3D vs 3D100!

by Richard G. Koehler J » Tue, 31 Mar 1998 04:00:00

Folks,

I have a 200 MHz Pentium with an Intense 3D100
card. I also have a 333MHz with a Diamond Fire GL 1000
and a Canopus Pure3D card.   The 200 with the I-3D100
has a "slightly" better look but I cannot run with all
the graphics options on. The 333 with the Pure3D is just
a tad weaker but runs with full graphics, no loss of
frame rate  that I can see. The  two lines  from the
"anti-aliasing" are there but bear in mind they are
1 pixel thick and to me almost completely unnoticeable
when racing, even at Bristol with everything maxed.
I mean that they are there, but of no consequence as
far as being able the run the simulation. I just do
not pay them any attention.
I'm not going to take the AGP/Pure3D out to
test the new machine with the 3D100 but overall I see
nothing to complain about as far as the 3DFX patch
goes. Heck we should be grateful that they even did
one.
Thank you Sierra, Dynamix, papyrus and off
course 3DFX!

Odd, with the 4-bit switch and my P5-166 and the Intergraph Reactor (aka
Intense 100), I was able to run with all detail on at maximum frame rate
except Martinsville and I think Bristol.  On the latter I had to turn
off the track texture to get 28-30 fps.  Were you running with 4-bit
textures?  Is your BIOS setup properly for latency timing and DMA
transfers?  You should easily run N2 with your Intense all the graphics
on except for about 2 tracks.

Richard,

no offense, but why is it suprising that a PII 333 is faster than a P5
200?
You are comparing apples and oranges here.

Put the 3D100 card in your PII 333 and see what happens.

Regards,

Todd

I wasn't comparing them for speed, but for their
beauty, if you will. I don't see why the 3DFX folks are
so unhappy. N2 was/is designed for Rendition but the
3DFX patch is very good. If you don't have a Rendition
card, their 3DFX is a damn fine alternative, and free
at that. That is what I meant. I will try the 3D100 in
the new PC, hopefully this week if I get a chance, and
yes I expect it to kick 3DFX butt!
