OT: Warbirds Flight Sim. Cross Paltform, OpenGl. Why not on Racing Sims?

by btgos » Sat, 08 Jul 2000 04:00:00

Hello. A friend of mine was trying again to get me to join his Warbirds
squad. He started by telling me about the "Warbirds" version. It uses
OpenGl, and will be made to run on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Will support
mutilple processors (if the OS allows.) Supposedly it can support up to 250
players, on connections as slow as 28.8.
Now I ask, why isn't something like this being done for racing sims. Perhaps
Warbirds will have to blaze the path. (and I am aware of the differences in
modelling a number of cars so close to the ground as opposed to planes above
a mostly featurelss terrain) But this is the kind of direction that racing
sims need to take.
Just my two cents.

I often asked the same question. As well as Warbirds does with such a large
number of people in one arena, and with such great physics modeling, I bet
they could have come up with one heck of a online racing sim.
Like GPL, Warbirds has quite a learning curve to become a good fighter
pilot. I've been in a squad there for over 4 years and have had allot of
good fun times in there. But it can be frustrating at times. You might want
to start out in bombers at first and work your way into the fighters. Flying
in a tight formation with your buds all tuned on Roger Wilco is pretty cool.
After you get good in fighters, landing a kill or two or even 3 is very
rewarding.  You should give it a try for awhile.

How much does Warbirds cost?  It sounds cool.  You've been in the same squadron
for 4 years???  Whoa...

Wasn't the crew that made AMA Superbike a bunch of former Warbird coders?
They had an online model similar to warbird's pay to play system, and they
had wonderful track recreations.  However, they rushed the product out the
door too soon and came up with a less than satisfying result.

The Warbirds bandwidth requirements are actually similar to
racing games because Warbirds only transmits data for 32
of the larger number of planes in the same sky. The number
is high enough to avoid most problems of planes blinking in
and out, except in the largest reinactments where planes
tend to cluster for such things as attacking and defending
bomber formations.

snipor even 3 is very

Air Warrior is a similar game and it is free when you sign up for
"flight school".  After that it is a tenner a month.  WB used to be $2
per hour, but that may have changed.  www.airwarrior.com.

Oh, I am not getting drawn in a discussion about which game is better
;-)

I still have the magazine and cd that I got WB's on may '96. It had a front
cover of Air Warrior on the front which I remember hearing about and wanted
to try it.  So I went to install what I thought was going to be Air Warrior
and they had Warbirds on the CD instead. This was my first multi player game
with more then one person. I still remember the rush I got after my 1st
kill.  Started the squad about a month later with one other guy and it got
somewhere 35 members at one time.
Back in the 1st year I was paying $1.99 an hr.  I got hooked and ran up
over $100 bills a month +/- $50 my first year. I weaned myself down after
that first year and am now on a $30 a month account that charges me only
$1.50 hr.  which covers my 2 squad nights a week. It also includes free Dawn
of Aces, which is WWI era aircraft that also has really great flight models.
I took advantage of that for a year although I was flying maybe a year in
DOA before they included it for free. I loved the closer quarter longer
lasting dogfights where you could really learn to maximize the edge of the
flight envelope. The $9.95 WB account I believe also Includes free DOA.
I don't fly as much DOA since I've gotten into GPL and some other racing
sims, but I still make most WB's squad nights and it's still fun.

I need a better-paying job.
