NVidia vs Voodoo

by Steve Garrot » Tue, 08 Feb 2000 04:00:00

Being a Voodoo1 racer on my last pc and a TNT2 racer on my curent
machine.

I would have to ask, "What is the purpose of the new computer?"

If the purpose of the new computer is to race GPL, and get better and
this being your primary use for the computer, then Voodoo is the way
to go.

If you are getting a new computer and are needing to do things other
than play games, as in work on a Photoshop, AutoCAD, or any other
graphic intensive, or if you need the ability to do 3D graphics in 32
bit color, then Nvidia is a better choice.

The nice thing about the Nvidia choice is, even if you do not care for
the GPL performance, you can always get a Voodoo2 card and add it on.

So could I actually get a Voodoo card and run it alongside the NVIDIA TNT2
in my system now??

I use a lowly TNT (not 2)
and get about 24 FPS incar, or 36 frames behibdview (wich i mostly run in
anyway.....

Do you have an Athlon?
I just put together a new Athlon based PC with a GeForce DDR last week,
and
GPL (or any game at all that tried to use 3D) would crash, until I
installed
the latest AMD AGP drivers.

Sort of...

The Voodoo 1 and Voodoo 2 chipsets were strictly 3D only, and installed
alongside an existing graphics adapter. A V1/V2 based card (or better still,
a pair of V2s) will, quite happily co-exist with a TNT card. If you want a
Voodoo 3 however, I'm afraid you've got a difficult choice to make...

nope - using a straight-up Gateway PC with INTEL motherboard/cpu
I've given up on GPL and went back to SCGT and Viper.  Maybe someday
Sierra will learn that the world progresses even if their software
doesn't.  Making a non-D3D game was purely insane - even 2 years ago
when Voodoo/3dfx "was" a standard.  They should have just made GPL a
pack-in title for people who bought voodoo cards or rendition cards if
that is all they planned on supporting.

I can understand your frustration.  To have to give up on a quality sim like
GPL for the sake of hardware and/or drivers is a real shame.  However, it
does point to a few things to bear in mind: it's usually a good idea to buy
hardware that supports the software you intend to use, not the other way
round.  It's also usually not a good idea to be an early adopter of new
hardware.  Drivers can sometimes take some time to mature and until they do,
the potential for problems/incompatabilities is high.

Thanks Johnathon,

I am more than happy with my TNT2 but wouldn't mind trying out a Voodoo to
see the difference it makes for GPL. I might just nip down to EB befroe the
weeks out and pick up a Voodoo 2 card to try it out. It shouldn't***
anything up in my system should it??

Well I can't blame Papy for a program they wrote 2 years ago and expect them to
be compatible with every new piece of technology - if only they had developed
for the D3D standard they would have been compatible as long as Windows and
DirectX were around - which is almost certainly going to be longer than 3dfx
