GPL - any hope running in NT

by Arto Wik » Tue, 23 May 2000 04:00:00

Hi all,

I already asked that among a set of questions, and also got one "yes"
answer. But once again: Is it possible to run GPL in Windows NT? As I
told somebody wrote it should be possible, but I have also heard that
DirectX has some problems with NT. And certainly I couldn't make GPL
run in NT. When I start it, I can see the first screen, but then it
goes back to Windows...

PS At home I run off line GPL in Win98, at work I have an "all the
time in the Internet" system, but the Win there is NT... ;-/

This is from the GPL 1.1 patch readme:

"GPL will now run on Windows NT with DirectX installed (I believe NT4 with
service pack 3, and NT 5 Beta 2).  The Generic joystick driver is not
avaliable on Windows NT.  GPL will also run on dual-processor NT systems,
and take advantage of both processors.  Don't expect any miracles, though.
GPL is quite memory intensive, and a dual-processor machine has two
processors fighting for memory bandwidth instead of just one.  Because of
GPL's architecture, it is unlikely that a machine with more than two
processors would provide any benefit."

So make sure you get the latest GPL patch (1.2) and atleast SP3 for NT...

Yes it's possible or at least I'm pretty sure it is. If I remember correctly
there are a few guys who run or have run dedicated servers on NT. It sounds
to me like you've got video card conflicts with yours I'd suggest you start
pushing the powers that be at work to upgrade to W2K. I can guarantee that
GPL works in W2K <G>.

I know it can be done. I had my GPL on WinNT 4.0 ( latest SP ) dual-Celeron
system. But unfortunately i don't remember what did it take to make it run.

Wheel ( yes it is possible to use analog wheel or joystick ). So keep
tryring different things.

Many thanks for all the advice! With 1.2 patch it works!

But now more questions:  (r.a.s is very useful ng, indeed!)

I can run only in software mode, and the graphics are very crude
compared to my home system's V2 quality.

If I try rendition alternative, I get an error message of lacking
redline.dll, glide2x.dll, and once again redline.dll.

My question is:  Does the card, Matrox Millennium G400 AGP, 16MB, support
the rendition GPL knows?
(The computer is "x86 Family 6 Model 8 Stepping 1, AT/AT Compatible,
261,556 KB RAM) (I guess that means something like PIII 500MHz?)

If the card is "rendition" in the GPL sense, what do I have to do?
Get some patches or updates somewhere?

Thanks in advance!

Rendition is a graphics chip that is all but obsolete by now. You'll need a
graphics card with the Rendition chip (such as Hercules Thriller) for the
Rendition version of GPL to work. Matrox cards are not Rendition cards.

There is an OpenGL-patch for GPL which works (kind of...) with the G400, but
I don't know how well it runs on NT. You can get the patch from www.papy.com
and try it out.

Thanks! But what do you do with the rastOGL.dll file? The READMEGL.TXT
only advices:

"If you are not already intimately familiar with the process of
updating your video drivers, then good luck, we hope you enjoy the
"ease of use" afforded you by Windows. :) But seriously, just follow
the instructions accompanying the drivers very carefully."

So certainly it is not enough just to copy rastOGL.dll somewhere?
And if by some funny accident I could do the right thing with
the rastOGL.dll, what graphics alternative should I select inside GPL?

With Matrox, NT and OpenGL-patch I get a black starting screen. And then
the already screened texts never disappear, those red and green "buttons"
on left and right corners are not visible... etc. And certainly no way
of ever hoping to get to to the track?

So I still guess in NT there is no other hope than the "software mode"?
And it seems to be absolutely too slow for even AI races! Not to speak
about VROC?
