GPL/MOMO/core.ini settings

Hi all, I recently re-installed GPL for a little fun, since I have a new
computer/wheel combo, and I'd like to fine-tune the feel of the wheel, I've
been di**ing around with the core.ini settings and it feels better, I'd like
to hear from any other MOMO users what settings feel best to you, meanwhile,
I'm off to test some more........
Thanks,
Ed

What exactly do you mean by hospital wobble?  Also which Momo are you
talking about?

FWIW, here are my settings for the Momo Racing wheel:

[ Hack ]
steer_ratio = 1                             ; Enable low speed ratio
override

[ Joy ]
allow_force_feedback = 1                 ; Use FF if device has it
force_feedback_damping = 30.0000       ; force feedback damping coefficient
(def. 40)
force_feedback_latency = 0.03000        ; force feedback latency (secs)
(def. 0.085)
max_steering_torque = 300.000000         ; steering torque in N*in giving
max device force (def. 225)

I leave the steer ratio hack on because it is blended so well with the high
speed steering that it doesn't really affect most driving, and it is the
only way to get around at Monaco or Mexico without using a ridiculously low
steering ratio.

I set latency by weaving back and forth on the straights at different
rhythms, increase latency gradually until the forces start to feel in phase
with the steering motions.

Damping affects the basic feeling of "weightiness" of the wheel, and also
seems to affect the feeling of the wheel getting lighter or heavier with
weight transfer.

Torque, as the readme file says, is inversely proportional to the number you
use, with lower numbers causing clipping of the higher forces.  I use 300 to
lighten the force just a tad compared to the default.

Very true. I use 8:1 at Monaco which is hard work, but I use 10:1 just
about everywhere else so Mexico doesn't create any extra problems for me.

I used a joystick for a long time & am used to having small movements make
big changes. It means I can catch slides that much more quickly, but it
does weave a little on the straights if I'm not careful.

I stopped using the steering hack when I had the joystick, because I used
to use 16:1 and the FF was really disconcerting during the transition
period (45-60mph).

I had to enable it for Monaco & Mexico though, I couldn't control a quick
enough steering ratio to get me round the hairpins.

Thx Malc, I've been slowly working my way towards those settings, I'll give
them a try, and Thanks again for the quick reply.

Now I wonder how I managed to reply to my own post up there? Don't remember
doing that.......

Haqsau, the classic "Hospital Wobble" is when you come out of a turn just a
bit too hot, with the car starting to come around, so you correct.....which
causes the car to catch, and so, you're now sliding in the opposite
direction. Up till now, it hasn't been serious enough to lift, so, you
continue with corrections until your car is weaving fully across the entire
racing surface as you chase it, until you do lift, and the next thing you
know.....you wake up in the hospital. Something like that.
And, it's the red MOMO Force, I've tried Malc's settings, very nice, I'll
give your's a go in a bit.

Okay I'm familiar with that.  Sometimes that can be due to suspension setup,
an inadequately damped rear end will do that.  But the problem is often
amplified by inadequate latency correction.  If the forces aren't in phase
you will find that the wheel actually starts to steer you in the wrong
direction and increases the wobble.  If you can feel it pulling in the wrong
direction in that situation, keep slowly increasing latency until it goes
away.  That's why I recommended weaving around on straights to set the
latency, it corresponds pretty well.  I have had to use as much as 120 msec
of latency on older computers to get rid of that problem.  OS seems to make
a big difference too, I had to use 120 msec with Win98, but only need 30
msec with XP.  Make sure your wheel drivers and your OS is up to date,
sometimes that can make a difference.
