Nascar initial thoughts and questions

by Andy Gart » Tue, 08 Aug 1995 04:00:00

Hi all,

Just installed Nascar...

1. On my P90/16 meg/Diamand 2MB VRAM machine, SVGA mode is still only
barely playable with nearly all details turned off, but the extra
clarity *almost* makes up for this.  VGA mode runs superbly with
everything on except road/grass textures.  Which mode do people
generally run to get the best times/have the most fun?!?

2.  My initial thoughts are that the two arcade views are easier to
use than "in-car", and my times certainly reflect that.  Which view do
"real" racers use?

3.  The default Ace settings are already getting me up in the top ten
at most tracks.  Is there much advantage to be gained on top of these
settings?

4.  In my (English) version the -h and -f flags are not documented
*anywhere*.  Is there something missing from my packaging (as it were)
or is this a big oversite by the publishers?

That's it...

Andy

I couldn't find documentation on the -h flag either, and I came close to
taking the game back (I found it by accident, by entering "nascar ?"). I
find the documentation incomplete and not well organized. I don't think I
could make much sense of many of the game's features without access to the
expertise available in this and other newsgroups.

I ran NASCAR on a P60 with PCI video setup.  It ran pretty darned good in
SVGA - most details on auto.  Set the minimum frame rate to something like
25.

When I'm actually *racing*, I use VGA (normally on a 486dx2-66 though) and I
auto all graphics except car texture and asphalt skids... I set my minimum
frame rate at 25 and my max at 30.

I *never* use arcade mode.  For me, that just what it looks like, an arcade
game.  When little kids come over, I put them in arcade mode (and the Dale
Earnhardt car, usually) and they "have a blast" destroying everyone (no
damage mode).  Race-wise, it's random weather as well, which is harder to
chase the setups.  Start with constant weather so you can build up some good
experience in chassis setups.

I rather suspect you need to tweak your system setup. On my P90, with
ATI Mach64 2Mb VRAM card, VGA mode runs superbly with ALL detail, max
cars and 25 drawn ahead, even at Sears Point (in the Track Pack) which
has a LOT of terrain graphics.

But I don't play VGA, I use SVGA, which, with road and grass texture
turned off is very playable (max cars, 25 drawn ahead), except with a
lot of terrain/background texturing to be done. I've taken the crowd
graphics off in addition to road/grass texture at C***te which
improves things substantially because of the long grandstand section.

Stuart.
