ICR2 General Car Setup - Turbocharger

ICR2 General Car Setup - Turbocharger

After seven months of offering advise to others, I have stumbled on a
question of my own:

While fine tuning most of my setups for the street circuits, I'm now in
a dilema of sorts.

In racing reality and by suggestion of the ICR2 manual, one should
usually pilot with one's turbocharger at a setting of ~6-8 using higher
as necessary during the race.  We all know that 9 is the awesome power
front, and it is generally were I like to run constantly at 100+%
races.  Is this a bad habit that should be changed?

If so, and most importantly, at what turbo setting should a driver
utilize during the testing and developing fine-tuned setups?

Surely it cann't just be a matter of personal preference, but after
running max turbo for some time (at the expense of greater engine wear
and fuel consumption = increased pit stops) it is difficult to "step
backwards".

Thank you for your suggestions and keep the faith.

Leave it on 9.  There is seldom any reason to take it off of 9.  Papyrus
'sims'<cough> do not have 'fuel limits', meaning you can make as many fuel
stops as you want until you finish the race.

If you want to save fuel, use a lower 6th gear ratio, not less turbo.
Unless you have 3 laps to go and 2.5 laps of fuel.  Then you might want to
turn boost down to 6 or so to make it to the line (that's the ONLY reason
to turn down boost).

Some people may suggest that you start with a boost of 3 or 4 and turn it
up as the tires warm up, but there is no need to.  I personally NEVER take
it off of 9.

Once fuel consumption becomes a factor in these 'sims'<cough>, then I will
consider the turbo as a tool, not just a fancy dial that I can turn.

Unless you are a one of the few cracker sim pilots out there, I don't
think you can run with the AI at 100% without the boost set to 9.  I
think Papy forgot to instruct the AI to turn down their boost.  I only
turned down the boost if I felt I could squeeze a few laps out before
the checker to avoid one last pit stop.  But, then I'm not one of the
fastest drivers out there either.  Heck, I'm like the guy from Spinal
Tap, I want an "11" on my turbo-boost.

I'd say use full turbo, so long as you can comfortably handle it
(and its best to learn how to handle it, because you'll need it
*somewhere* on most of the tracks).  What we *really* need is for ICR3
(assuming it happens) to have a total race fuel limit, so we have to
think about fuel conservation, just like the real thing.  End-race pit
stop strategy is the main reason for turning down the turbo (but it
pales in comparison to not having *any* fuel left in the pits ;).  I
don't think there is a significant increase in breakdowns with full
turbo (unless you over-rev).

At Michigan , however, your car will overheat if you run flat out with
full boost for more than 20 or 30 laps...

Don't they actually adjust the fuel mixture and not the turbo boost in the
real Indycars? When I'm running low on fuel, I just shift earlier on the
road courses. On ovals, I setup 5th gear as my normal racing gear and 6th
gear as an economy gear.

Hi David,

You're absolutely right...fuel mixture is what the drivers mess with the
most.  I don't even know if they have an in-car boost control, but
mixture is definitely used, and I believe it helped the Target boys
bigtime this year (plus the white "mystery" button they had!).

I personally use turbo boost for fuel economy only...otherwise it lives
at "9".  Big difference from ICR1 when I used to run short ovals
flipping
back and forth from 6 to 9 on the turns and straights.

Actually, I'm 99% certain that they have both a boost AND a mixture
control in the***pit.

Have you tried a higher (numerically lower) 6th gear ratio to
reduce RPM (and engine temp)?

Before you send me UCE, I know what you're thinking...  Did he complain
to five or six postmasters last month?  Now, you must ask yourself one
question: "Do I feel lucky?"  Well, do you, punk?
