What a total shame.  I never really followed Alex's career until he showed
up in F1 again.  I always felt that he had more to offer the series, and
racing in general.  Unforunately, this accident will prevent us from seeing
what victories he may have had in the future.  My best wishes for his
recovery...

This is awful, will this week of tragedy never end. I am in the UK and have
not seen the race yet, all I know is what I have read. My heart goes ou to
Zanardi, a great racer.

From the official CART website.

INJURY UPDATE: According to Dr. Steve Olvey, CART Director of Medical
Affairs, Alex Tagliani is awake and alert at Klinikum Berlin-Marzahn
(hospital). He received a CT scan and x-rays, which revealed no injuries. He
also received an x-ray of his left knee, which revealed no injuries. The
current plan is to keep him under observation for 24 to 48 hours. Alex
Zanardi has lost both of his legs, one above the knee, one below. He also
sustained a possible broken pelvis, he was in stable condition when he was
admitted to surgery at about 6:00 p.m. local time. The procedure was
expected to take about five hours.

The race is being tape delayed in the States, but I did listen to a small
portion on the internet via the CART radio network.  Alex was driving a
suberb race.  It was almost like the Alex of old...My heart goes out to the
man and his family.
tragic  ....   again....

It was truly a great race up until 10 laps before the flag... Alex was doing
a great job, showing all of europe what CART racing is all about - and then
this happens...
I can't believe it :o(
