Don,
I have had the exact same results with a P/166 and the Orchid card.
Heck, I had the same result with a PII/300. I think it takes a Cray
SuperComputer with some wiz-bang 1 gig video card to run MSCART at
decent framerates AND full detail. I think that's important because I
don't like to run at anything less than full detail. You are entirely
correct about F1RS, it's a blast on a normal computer, 3dfx card, and
full detail.
In all frankness, I don't think that Microsoft will ever be able to
patch MSCART. In fact, I think that just about anyone praising this game
at all has some other agenda. Come on people, give me a break- the
graphics stink, the controls stink, the AI stinks, what did I forget,
right, the framerates stink. I think the code is hopelessly mired, as is
Microsoft's own 3d API, Direct3D. They may be able to tweak mild
improvements, but to fix it, I don't believe it is even possible. Not
unless they patch it to Glide and abandon Direct3D, if only for this
game. Can you see Microsoft in effect admitting that their own 3d API
stinks? Nope. Give it up people, figure that fifty bucks was not too bad
for another lesson in politics. Keep the disc around, they do make nifty
coasters.
There, I feel better now. All the best, Mike Davis
