Rally Games for the PC.......

I am wondering what you people consider to be the best rally
simulator for the PC? I personally would absolutely without question
choose COLIN McRAE RALLY. The physics are outstanding, but the only
problem that I found was that the stages are just too short. The longest
stage is only about 8 kilometers long, which is way too short.

I also purchased MOBIL 1 RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP, and was very
disappointed with it. Its driving model is totally unrealistic, but at
least the stage lengths and the co-driver communication are true to
life.

Has anyone else tried any other RALLY games out there? If so, please
let me know which ones and what you thought of them. I am looking for
something that has a relatively high degree of realism with a good
physics model (like that which is utilized by COLIN McRAE RALLY).

Also, what is the deal with COLIN McRAE RALLY II? When is the
tentative release date? Does anyone know if there is a website
previewing this game?

    Thanks guys,
    Cary Martynuik

Funny, I tried the demo for CMR and thought the physics were rather hokey.
I had the impression that the car was swiveling on center point.  Is the
full version more believable?

There are three main rally games out there, CMR, Rally Champ and Rally
Masters (the latter being more of a motorcross sim.) Personally, I'm
favouring RC of the three for it's adrenaline rush, and once you patch it
the steering becomes considerably more believable. CMR2 is out on
Playstation, but not PC yet, and to be honest I'm not sure when it's due.

Hey,
Pekka H. did a review on Rally Masters for BHMS, found at
http://www.bhmotorsports.com/reviews/rm_review.htm .  I looked for it here
in the US a few days ago but could not find it.  I learned the name for the
US Version is "Test Drive Rally", and that it's not available yet (listed as
pre-order at www.babbages.com).

Rally Games for the PC.......

I've got Rally Masters and I find it a lot of fun, very similar to CMR, but
with better graphics, and more options, such as normal rally, Super Specials
(one on one) and Rallycross, where you race against several other drivers in
matching cars.

I'm not sure what Colin means by "a motorcross sim" unless he is referring
to the aforementioned Rallycross option?

The only problem with this game, is that it's similar to CMR in that it's
half sim, half arcade with no patches (at least yet!) available. This is
from the same folks who brought us the LeMans 24 hours "Test Drive" game
that got such lousy reviews, so that may be part of it.

Still it's a lot of fun, and from what I understand Internet play is a blast
with this game (have never tried it).

Just my 2 cents..

BTW, I had to order it as an import from InteractCD for $45 ! It's not set
to debut in the USA until Christmas time, and I didn't want to wait that
long (picked this up about 2 months ago).

Hmmm, not sure about CMR being classed as a Sim? Depends on your
definition of a sim I s'pose? Bit too Arcade for me though.

Have you seen the ptach which addressed the handling issue, it
transforms the game as you can alter the cars braking steering etc.
There is info about the patch on my webpage, (URL below) see the PC
driving games *Tips* section.

Rally Masters is pretty good, although IMHO it too is a bit too arcade
like, but it is a good game without doubt.

There si some info and links about CMR on my site, go to the PC Driving
Games *previews* section.

There are a couple of other *off road* titles due out soon to....

Rally Games for the PC.......

    Peter,
Thank you very much for replying to my post, I really appreciate you
taking the time to give me some much needed info regarding "cleaning up" the
gameplay of MOBIL 1 RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP. If you don't mind, I also happen to
have a couple other questions that you may be able to help me with.

I am using the LOGITECH WINGMAN FORMULA FORCE FEEDBACK wheel and pedal
set, and am wondering what you think I should have the steering sensitivity
set at? Right now when I play this particular game no matter how much I
fiddle with the steering sensitivity, dead zone, etc, I cannot get it
anywhere near to a realistic feeling. It seems that when I steer I only have
to move the wheel fractionally in order to make a huge turn. If I set the
dead zone larger, then as I turn the wheel, there is no response, no
response, no response, then bam!!! HUGE TURN!!

Please help me out with any more info you think may help!!!

    Sincerely,
    Cary Martynuik

Not exactly true.  TD:LM was developed by French (?)
developers Eutechnyx who made the awful top-down racer "Motor Mash."
Rally Masters (aka Test Drive: Rally in the States) was made by DICE
in Sweden, who had previously created the pretty-good Motorhead and
Swedish Touring Car Championship.

You have to wonder, though: Does Infogrames really believe
that the Test Drive name holds any value in north America?  The last
good Test Drive game, in my opinion, was the second one!

Yes, I did apply the patch. I found a way to actually make the sim much
more driveable while using my current controller. Instead of selecting the
"2 AXIS STEERING WHEEL" as my controller (I have a "LOGITECH Wingman Formula
Force" Force-feedback steering wheel) I select the ANALOGUE JOYSTICK
instead. I still use my steering wheel, but when it is set as ANALOGUE
JOYSTICK, the games controls seem to be much more realistic!
