Well, "common", I don't know about that. The total number of killed is
probably not up to one particular circuit racing event's('56 Le Mans).
Nope. Here in Sweden, we had our first spectator fatality ever past
fall. It was truly a freak accident though, as the spectators stood in
a safe area behind two trees. But the car got airborn in an "unusual"
fashion and got between the two trees sideways reaching the two
onlookers.
Something similar happened in GB a year or two ago. In northern Europe
this isn't a big problem.
*However*, in the mediterranean countries this is a HUGE problem
though, most notably in portugal. I don't know what the problem is,
but maybe it brings out the matador in every portoguese? :-) Btw, this
was a huge problem on the Targa Florio as well. Must be a cultural
thing or something.
Rally drivers are not lunatics either, and it has happened more than
once that they have refused to start on crowded stages.
Happens every year.
