licences I enjoy - BTCC back in '97ish, the Aussie V8's etc, and have
spectacularly failed to deliver anything worth playing. When I first heard
about TOCA Touring Car Championship I was sooooo e***d - finally a game on
one of the most fantastic motor sports! I can finally race on Donington and
Brands Hatch in a Laguna, just like Alain Menu! Oh, but you see, I can't.
Why, I hear you cry? Because they made a pants game and passed it off as
arcade. You retards! And now TOCA Race Driver / Pro Race Driver / V8 Race
Driver and whatever else they are calling it worldwide is pants as well!
Look at our revolutionary crash dynamics! It's a shame they left in the AI
for their damage presentation instead of putting the 'real' AI back in. It's
a shame that such a revolutionary concept of storylines in racing games is
debuting in this game. But mostly, it's a shame that 'arcade' handling
nowadays means "our quick-and-dirty movement code for checking if the tracks
looked okay, which could possibly be a simulation of a hover craft or
something, but we doubt it because it would be shocking if our coders could
simulate anything whatsoever." Arcade is just easier for the gamer than
simulation, not a whole new control method! You jerks! All you arcade racing
game coders out there (Codemasters, most of EA, Geoff Crammond :-), why
don't you stop trying to make maximum money out of minimum effort, and make
a proper race game? I definitely don't want all race games to be
simulations, but just have some relevance to reality. Is that too much to
ask?
Come to think of it, Codemasters seem to be the David Coulthard of race sim
coders - always have the best cars, always fail to deliver*.
* that is an _opinion_. It is my _opinion_. If you think DC or Codemasters
are fantastic, then that is up to you. You will not change my _opinion_ by
flaming me about how DC overtook Michael Schumacher once in his career, so
don't even bother. If you are outraged, send your flames to
