GPL Sensitive to System Crash?

GPL Sensitive to System Crash?

by John Simmo » Mon, 18 Jan 1999 04:00:00

Over the last week, I've had two catastrophic system crashes (once was
windows being it's notmal unstable self, and another was a blown circuit
breaker) while driving in GPL.

Subsequent attempts to run GPL resulted in the program crashing at
unpredictable times (anywhere from 30 seconds to 3 or 4 minutes).

In both instances, re-copying the GPL.EXE file from the CD fixed the
problem.

I have NEVER seen anything like this in all my 18 years as a programmer.
Has anyone got a clue as to what the problem might be?

I'm running Winblows98 if that matters.

Just for your info only...from a novice...my 233 P2 w/Rendition 8mb won't run
the GPL demo. System locks with mouse curser displayed. I get broken sound of
car running but intro page displayed. After shutdown, I have to reinstall the
video drivers to regain full screen normal WIN98 operations. All other driving
games work normally. Good luck. Chuck

Is this with the 1.0.0.0 demo?

Just a thought - had you patched GPL to enable individual car sounds.

Now you have me thinking about it GPL seems to have crashed quite a few
times since I did!

Cheers

The first time it happened, I was indeed running GPL with the carsound
patch.  However, I don't think the patch is the cause, as the second time
it happened, I was still running what had been a freshly copied GPL.EXE
(unpatched).  That's the only reason I posted anbout it.

It's available at http://start.at/kotr

In GPL, the same sound (COSWORTH.WAV file) is used for the engine sound of
the Lotus and Eagle.  The patch changes GPL to look for separate WAV files
for each car in the gpl\sound directory.  Some of the GPL carets (easily
installed using Nigel Pattinson's  excellent GPLSeason) include revised car
sounds.

Yes. I take it that there is a later version of the demo or a demo patch?

There were two versions of the demo released, one way back in the
spring based on pre-alpha code and a second shortly after the release
this fall of GPL based on the final code.  The final demo will display
GPL 1.0.0.0 in red letters on the opening splash screen.  I don't
recall what, if any, version is reported on the original demo.  The
final demo will install and play properly on Win98, whereas the
original demo has major problems syncing the sound/physics/graphics on
Win98.

The version of the old demo was 0.0.0.5 if I recall well.

Thanks Eric and Bart. I actually had installed the 0.0.05 version. The 1.0
version runs great except that my screen re-sizes every time i exit the GPL
demo and go back to Windows. I appreciate your help. Chuck

Strange...are you sure you don't have a virus? Otherwise I couldn't
imagine why re-copying the GPL.EXE could fix the problem...
