Everyone --
I was thinking about this for a bit. In light of the recent
sanctioning of the MP service by NASCAR, I've been considering
previous precedent with new NASCAR touring series regarding tracks.
Now, as we all know, the Daytona 500 is, was, and always will be the
crown race of the Winston Cup series. However, we all know that not
all of NASCAR's touring series run at Daytona (witness Busch North,
Winston West, etc.). In fact, no NASCAR touring series runs on the
exact same schedule of tracks. The Craftsman Trucks series have
Phoenix and Homestead as their crown events, for example, and the
Busch series runs races at different short tracks (Nazareth,
Nashville, etc.) during its season.
So, since Papyrus MP is NASCAR's newest division, why don't we stop
worrying about Daytona and Indianapolis (which are probably going to
be held up in legal snafus forever) and instead petition Papyrus to
build two NEW ovals? Unique ovals, not just a ported C***te or
Talladega. Heck, it worked in Las Vegas and Texas for Winston Cup!
And what about Disney World (IRL) or Homestead (Trucks/IndyCars)? I
think that to recognize the event we should get a brand new venue or
two. It would give our division a sense of uniqueness and identity.
Why should OUR series run all the same tracks as Winston Cup?
Wouldn't that just make MP a "Winston Wannabe" league? :-) If we had
new venues sprinkled into the old favorites, then even the veteran
Winston Cup drivers would have a challenge racing in our division.
Imagine Jeff Gordon or Bobby Labonte struggling to qualify for a new
1.5 mile track situated in, say, St. Louis!
Now, this doesn't necessarily mean that NASCAR II should not have the
full Winston Cup schedule of tracks. I'm speaking solely of
Multiplayer as a new NASCAR division. Papyrus should (and probably
will) continue to try to get Indy and Daytona if they can. But
possibilities are limitless in Multiplayer.
Just a thought...
