HAWAII: Tracks and NASCAR's sanctioning

by Tony Joh » Wed, 22 May 1996 04:00:00

Everyone --

I was thinking about this for a bit.  In light of the recent
sanctioning of the MP service by NASCAR, I've been considering
previous precedent with new NASCAR touring series regarding tracks.

Now, as we all know, the Daytona 500 is, was, and always will be the
crown race of the Winston Cup series.  However, we all know that not
all of NASCAR's touring series run at Daytona (witness Busch North,
Winston West, etc.).  In fact, no NASCAR touring series runs on the
exact same schedule of tracks.  The Craftsman Trucks series have
Phoenix and Homestead as their crown events, for example, and the
Busch series runs races at different short tracks (Nazareth,
Nashville, etc.) during its season.

So, since Papyrus MP is NASCAR's newest division, why don't we stop
worrying about Daytona and Indianapolis (which are probably going to
be held up in legal snafus forever) and instead petition Papyrus to
build two NEW ovals?  Unique ovals, not just a ported C***te or
Talladega.  Heck, it worked in Las Vegas and Texas for Winston Cup!
And what about Disney World (IRL) or Homestead (Trucks/IndyCars)? I
think that to recognize the event we should get a brand new venue or
two.  It would give our division a sense of uniqueness and identity.
Why should OUR series run all the same tracks as Winston Cup?
Wouldn't that just make MP a "Winston Wannabe" league? :-)  If we had
new venues sprinkled into the old favorites, then even the veteran
Winston Cup drivers would have a challenge racing in our division.
Imagine Jeff Gordon or Bobby Labonte struggling to qualify for a new
1.5 mile track situated in, say, St. Louis!

Now, this doesn't necessarily mean that NASCAR II should not have the
full Winston Cup schedule of tracks.  I'm speaking solely of
Multiplayer as a new NASCAR division.  Papyrus should (and probably
will) continue to try to get Indy and Daytona if they can.  But
possibilities are limitless in Multiplayer.

Just a thought...

I like the idea Tony, but how about some of the tracks no longer
running in WC?  Bring back Riverside, CA, or maybe some of the BGN
tracks, Nashville, Hickory, etc...

I really LIKE this idea! But rather than just a bunch of new ovals, how
about another unique track, in the way that Pocono is unique. Maybe a
combination oval/road course? I'd also like to see another short track,
like Nashville or Portland added to the season.

What about travel costs?  Some of the small teams may not be able to
afford the cost of transporting their car cross country.  I think we
should stay on the east coast.

All kidding aside, I agree with you.

As a side note, maybe ESPN, ABC, CBS, TNN, or TBS will even put some of
the races on TV!!!

Or how about an editor that lets us design our own tracks?   Considering
how complex a process it is to create those Doom levels and even more
insane to create Descent 3D levels, surely a nearly level (in
comparison) track editor can't be impossible.....

I have to second the request for Riverside, CA track. I used to live 2
hours from there and watched a number of Winston West 500 Races. Besides
NASCAR Racing needs another Road Course.

And, actually, if everyone's so hot for Indy, we can just recreate the
old Ontario Motor Speedway where NASCAR used to run in the 60s and
early 70s.. it was a nearly exact copy of Indy, just with a different
name and owner.

Who's to know if once someone has Ontario on disk that they might
change the name on their HD to Indy? :-)

A great idea, that's what we really need.

Good ideas! I think we could use a 2.5 mile pure oval with high banks and
room for four wide flat out all the way around. Sort of like a huge
Bristol or a Michigan with more banking and longer straights. This would
be an easy track to drive but would be great to learn drafting. The races
there would be great.
