I didn't say it was easy - especially as my best is in the 1:28's, it's
just that I like to drive flowing curves that link together with changes
of gradient and camber. i.e. the Ring:-)

For the Lotus, of course.  Low 1'29's with the Honda are incredible laptimes
for me <g> (I've never seen a sub 1:29 with the Honda).

Lucky you! :-)

I can see the ads from lonely GPLers now:

s/w/m enjoys long walks on the track, intimate dinners at a little cafe on
the exit
of the Masta kink, and Sunday drives in the country (at frightening speeds).
Looking for s/w/f with sub-1:30 at Monza and an intimate understanding of
differential settings. I'm a smoker but I'm working on throttle control.

I guess it's one of the only tracks where you don't have to be fully
concentrated every single second and it's quite easy to learn too mostly
because everybody knows the track from modern F1 sims.

Congrats - but I think you are wrong about needing 1:28s to chase the fast
guys!  What you really need is to be able to run nice clean consistent 1:29s
and 1:30s lap after lap after lap ... you get the idea.  There are a lot of
hotlappers out there who dont race well simply because they need their line
and ONLY their line to go fast.  Thats a bit of a problem when there are
other cars on the track running what they think are their best lines.  I
finish in the top three of a majority of the VROC races I run because I can
run 29s and 30s all day long, yet I rarely run a 28.  There are guys out
there running low 27's fairly often, and a few of them are consistant ( to
be read as "unbeatable!")  but the vast majority of hotlappers are , "1:28,
spin, 1:28, spin, 1:28, wreck" guys who I wave to on the side of the track
when I go "1:30, 1:30, 1:30.........

Congratulations though - and keep practicing!!

It's easy to see just how inconsistent even the fastest guys are with the
latest version of SpyGirl.  When you select a replay, even though you only have
the one replay, you get to see ALL the lap times that were done in that
session.

I'm not a hotlapper but can hold my own at most races. The times below gave
me a 3rd place in a VROC race at Monza using a Ferrari (starting towards the
back of the grid because I didnt qualify) and with 4th place finishing close
behind me.

Grand Prix Legends
Autodromo Nazionale di Monza
Lap Times
Ian Parker
18/12/99

Practice  None

Race  1  1:41.96
2  1:29.88
3  1:29.85
4  1:28.99
5  1:28.86
6  1:28.75
7  1:28.87
8  1:29.02
9  1:30.21
10  1:28.70
11  1:28.55

So running 1:29's and 30's may be ok for most races, but there are many fast
people out there who are also very consistent.

Ah, but that's when they're really going for it and hotlapping. In races
the majority of them are very consistent. See if you can get hold of a
replay of a Champs League race and prepare to pick your jaw up off the
floor :-)

Well that's not exactly true. If you watch a hotlap race, they are
inconsistent indeed. But that's logical, since hotlapping is all about
finding the limits of racing. During races all hotlappers I know are
very consistent. If they can drive 1.27 laps, they can drive low 1.28
laps during races very consistant with ease.

Great!
When I finally manage to squeeze in a 1.29.98 at monza you
have to post something like this.

This might cheer you up:
I have a replay of a (well known) "hotlapper" doing low 1:27's lap
after lap, after lap, after lap, after lap, after....
And no...he didn't spin once.

I'm glad someone mentioned the Cooper.
I can manage low 1:29's in the fast cars and easy 1:30's in the
others but no matter how much I try and after endless different
gearing permutations I just cant break 1:31 in the Cooper.
It simply will not go.

Yes, there are lots of people who are faster and more conistent than I am, I
was just posting as an example ;)
I can do 27's in an Eagle but they are few and far between, besides I
normally drive the Ferrari !!
A friend of mine can do regular 27's in a Ferrari !!!!!
