Anyone make this change, and if so was the performance increase worth it?  I
see you can buy the PNY FX 5900 new online for $192.  It's not the se or
whatever version either.  Any comments welcome.

I just went from a gf 4400 to a leadtek fx 5950 ultra 256mb. The difference
is massive :). Every single game ive tried i can run at 1600x1200 with very
high fps. Most fx cards are very overclockable too, soo you can push them a
bit ( my clock speeds are now 550/1050). Im not sure how it copes with AA
and anistropy cause i dont really use them.
Id say definitly do it, the latest drivers that are coming out now are
basically written for fx cards and any of them that are after 5x.xx work
great.
 hope that helps

This is a pretty good deal.  You might look at the memory used on the card,
the ones with faster rated memory (like $220) or so will overclock to
5900ultra levels pretty easily.

My question still is about the shader performance of the 5900 cards.  A
friend and I compared a FX5900 and my 9700pro on the same speed system in
3dmark2001, and while his 5900 had a higher fillrate, the 9700p was nearly
twice the speed in shader performance.  I'd like to see actual games
comparisons between these two cards.

Interesting.  What CPU?

I have a Ti 4400/XP1800 and just recently tried the release 53.04whql
drivers (W98SE; yes, I know).  NR2003 dropped 10FPS at the same settings
from the 45.23whql's and GPL went into serious stutter mode; so back to
square one, or rather 45.23.  FPS back to normal.

Since we're on the subject of Graphics, is anyone else getting stuttering in
LFS?  Even when my FPS is reading in the 80's I'm still getting graphic
stutters.  Especially when you're looking to the side, you can see the
scenery going by in stop-start fashion.  It's enough to make me ill!  Tried
messing with the pre-render settings, etc., but no luck.  Too bad; the new
MRT5 Formula SAE car is a hoot.  Most fun LFS car to drive so far.
