N4 AI, it's not that bad

I just completed a 50% race at Daytona with 35 cars. I got the Blackhole
Motersports setup and it is very very good. I can run in traffic with ease,
hit the apron and even bump the AI without fear of wrecking, I also passed a
few cars in the outside line (with drafting help of course).

The race:
I qualed 5th, jumped out front on the start (you can really pass up the AI
on starts, you could pass half the field in N3 but it's better in N4) and I
stayed out front till I had to pit for fuel. I pitted 4 laps before the AI
did and didn't get enough fuel to finish :(, thankfully the AI had a wreck
in the pits and the yellow came out :). This caused half the field to be
lapped since they were in the middle of pitting when the yellow dropped.
Viewing the replay I saw that 2 cars were side by side in the pits and the
outside car turned into the other one to get to his stall. The 2 cars merged
and then blew apart causing the yellow. After re-pitting for fuel I started
14th at the back of the field. I had to stay high under yellow because the
AI were zipping by underneath trying to get in their proper spots. I would
have been wiped out had I been a little lower and the AI didn't seem to care
if anything was in front of them. Restarted without problems on the outside
row and weaved my way through the entire field (it was nerve wracking and
awesome fun!) AI was great during all of this and as long as I held my line
and was patient I had no problems. Got out front again and won the race.
That setup is the greatest!

So for those having problems with the AI, drive clean and hold your line.

As for yellows, stay high or they will wipe you out!

I have seen other problems like when I caused a wreck and came to a stop on
the low side, I got back on the track and went high and got driven over by
AI. I learned that after you wreck, get off the track and make sure you have
a clear track to get back up to speed!

Another one was when the pole sitter had car trouble on the start and the
lower line would not speed up to pass him even though he was low and off the
track, didn't take off till we had made it back around to the SF line and by
then the outside line had lapped us!

These are most of what I've seen and if you listen to everyone, papy could
spent the rest of their lives tweaking the AI and some people would still be
complaining.

IF YOU RACE CLEAN, ARE PATIENT, AND HOLD YOUR LINE, you have fewer AI
troubles and a good stable setup really really really really helps!

Use the F2 key and hit SPACEBAR to set it up so you can see all the
cars on the track, how close they are to you in intervals.  Using
this, you can avoid getting run over alot better...

Yes as long as you can stay ontrack, and learn the turn-in points for the
ai...you'll
stand a good chance of running a clean race...but if you try and pass on the
inside of the dogleg at Texas, you'd better make sure you've completed the
pass before turn one.
and if you do get punted off, or slide off on your own...don't expect the AI
to see you when you come back to the track's edge..
The ai behaivor reminded me a lot of the those first driving games where you
drove from the bottom to the top of the screen while a snake-like road edge
wiggled by on both sides.
As long as you kept your speed up, you would be ok, but hit a car, or bump
the borders and bang, bam, pow....the scrolling ai cars would plow right
through you as you scrambled to get up to speed.  N4 is a-lot like that....
The ini fix at the uspits.com does help but doesn't eliminate the
behaivor, and I worry that our mucking about in the files will mess up
another calcualtion or something that the ai
normally uses.

If your description equates to "not that bad", then you need higher
standards!!

Nothing seems to meet your standards, I've seen your posts.
I don't think the current problem with the games AI necessitates returning
the game, just that if people
1) practiced more got better so as to hold their lines
2) stayed high on yellows
3) checked the track better when getting back on after a wreck
their AI worries would be very few.

What would have to happen before you were willing to acknowledge that there
is a problem?  Your description in the original post says it all.  Maybe you
have been brainwashed by game companies into thinking that products are
supposed to be released before they are finished?  I haven't.

Marc.
