When Dr. Bohanan is quoted as saying "the *** impact into the steering
wheel (cuz belt broke) was severe enough to break the back of Dale's skull".
He originally said, on that black Sunday, that there was NO sign of ***
injury. Not so sure he was telling the truth, maybe just playing into the
potential hysteria that he could have caused by saying otherwise.
If Dale hit the wheel with his face as he has now said, it is obvious he
would have have some visible injury to his chin or jaw.
Please Dale Jr., for your own sake (be selfish on this one, man), start
wearing a full face helmet. I am no liberal, and I DO NOT enjoy ANY
governing body telling me what is good for me. But it is clear and obvious
that Dale Sr. would still be alive (not saying he would not have severe
injuries) were it not for a full face helmet.
The H.A.N.S. is a different argument all together (one which MUST be
supported by all drivers). Maybe I am not familiar with the EXACT workings
of the device, but if his head were not able to make contact with the wheel,
it is clear what would not have happened. I am merely trying to put 1 and 1
together here. It seems so simple to me.
4 deaths in NASCAR in 3 yrs. is COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE!! Even in this
inherently dangerous sport. Why not do everything possible to prevent injury
or death?
Is it a deeply proud southern ignorance that prevents guys from using all
safety equipment available to them?? ie: "i won't be told to wear a helmet
on my motorbike!!..you can't tell me what's good for me!!"...is it this kind
of ignorance that is in the mindset of drivers?
I do NOT wish to have any more of my heros taken away from me because of
this kind of mentality. It is senseless. IMHO.
Dale was more of a hero to me alive then dead.
And I am just a Canadian onlooker (big fan).
F1 seems overdue for a driver's death. Other than the official in San Marino
last year, it is since 94 when the beloved Ayrton Senna was taken from us. I
REALLY HOPE I AM WRONG.
We have seen somne horrific crashes with only broken bones as a result from
some SERIOUS safety rules changes and implementations in F1.
I wish NASCAR and all of its devoted members, drivers, crews, wives, fanily,
etc. all step up their efforts ten fold.
I miss Dale.

A full faced helmet wouldn't have helped.  He also had 8 broken ribs and a
broken sturnum<---sp?.  This would probably lead to pretty sever internal
injuries.  If you hit a concrete wall at 60 mph without a seatbelt, your
chances of living are pretty slim.  When you hit it at 180 mph you have no
chance without a belt.  It just happened that the head injuries killed him
first.

The head injuries would have been just as severe with a full face helmet on.

I agree. I do have a picture of the car while it impacted the wall and you can
clearly see the Dale did hit the wheel. No I am not proud of the picture but it
does help me see what really happened. I was getting tired of all the run
arounds that NASCAR was pulling on this one. Two many different storys in one
week.
God Bless

When you hit it at 180 mph you have no

He did not hit the wall at 180 mph.

180 mph was his speed in a straight line. Speed was then scrubbed off, and,
he hit the wall at an angle.

Very true...we need to know the angle he hit the wall to know his relative
impact speed with the wall.

The seatbelt was broken.  Whether it broke sometime during the race, or on
impact is not clear.

Computer Hardware in relation to use and suitability with sims _would_ be on
