latly i've noticed a number of places that are hosting a race season
via internet simply by each racer e-mailing their results to the race
organizer.  i seem to remember something about pypyrus having a bbs
that you could actually drive against other people (more than just
one at a time) but for most was a long distance call.  was this how
it worked?  why doesn't anyone set something like that up on the net?
no longdistance calls to get the phone companies richer and the
racers poorer.  anyone could dial there provider and link to the race
from there...  anything in the works? i'd love to drive against
people from all over the world in real time and under exactly the
same circumstances...  a real race 39 drivers, each unique and
responding to each other.

Voren,
Papyrus does have a bbs, but it is not for multiplayer racing.
There is a league simillar to what you talked about at that location
though.
Papyrus is in the testing stage for a multiplayer network, and
hopefully with have it operating soon.  The cost is not known at the
moment, but $5 an hour would be reasonable for the competition you
would get.

Hope this helps,

: what you're discribing is what they're working on.  Project name hawaii,
: it'll have a 900 access number.

  I thought it's gonna be a 1-800 number. Or is a 1-900 number toll-free
as well?

: What I'ld love to see is real time play over the net, like air warrior
: kinda stuff for the internet!  Is it possible, anyone?

You bet it's possible to race over the net. If ICR II would support
IPX than you could spend hours and hours and hours and hours, ahem -
excuse me, racing.  However, Nascar does support IPX (Network gameplay).
There is a service called KALI. It's like a _big_ LAN.  I usually play
Descent over KALI and if you have a 28.8 it's pretty good. Well, on
weekends that is. The traffic on the net is lower.

I'm VERY surprised that Papyrus did put IPX into ICR II.

Another thing is IHHD. While KALI 'simulates' IPX, IHHD simulates a
'Direct Link'. IHHD is very hard to setup. You gotta have good knowledge
about Unix(es) because you have to run it off your interactive account.
It took me about three months just to get the dialer running. I haven't
even had a chance playing anything over IHHD because by the time I had
IHHD up, KALI was already running.

Later

Dave.

what you're discribing is what they're working on.  Project name hawaii,

For the internet series, they don't race each other live, they get a race
package with the data for the race and they race on their own and upload
their own races.

What I'ld love to see is real time play over the net, like air warrior
kinda stuff for the internet!  Is it possible, anyone?

I do not believe that Papyrus has made any decision to the fact that Hawaii
will be accessed by a 900 number.

Can't be done.  Look at all the warping in Air Warrior.  If you had half as
much warping in a racing game it would be completely unplayable.

1-900 is toll free to the phone company, but the service charges you I
think.

thanx for the info.

I'm curious if you've been able to run NASCAR over Kali on the net, and if
so, how it has performed.
