I havn't run GPL for a while now due to finding time. But I love GPL.

Question is: I've read alot of people talking about F1, F2 and F3. How do you
choose which one you are running?

when you choose TRAINING, it is done with the car type:  F1=Grand Prix
F2=Advanced Trainer and F3=Novice Trainer

And I think if you choose SINGLE RACE or CHAMPIONSHIP, the type of race and
damage model corresponds to the type of car....  (is this right?)  Novice
Race=Novice Trainer,  Intermediate Race=Advanced Trainer,  Pro Race and
Grand Prix=Grand Prix......   I may be wrong on that, I never even
considered starting with the trainer cars so I don't know for sure on the
race part....

GPL only allows you, by default, to "race" the Grand Prix cars (called F1).
You can only practice with the trainer car (F3) and the advanced trainer
(F2).  But that can easily be changed.

When GPL starts, chose Player info and create 2 new players on top of the
one you already have.

Ex: Mine are

Robert
Gravel F1

and I've created

Robert
Gravel F2

and

Robert
Gravel F3

Once you've done that, close the game and go into Windows Explorer,
typically at : C / Sierra / GPL /  and you'll see a folder called "Players".

Click on "your name F2" and open player.ini , and under [personal
information] go to driverRating and change the 3 for a 2. That will give you
an F2 car.

Do the same to "your name F3" and change it to 1.  That will give you an F3
car.

I know it seems strange to have the F1 as driver rating 3, F2 as 2 and F3 as
driver rating 1 but thats the way it is.

With that, you'll be able to race the fabulous F2's and F3's.

Have fun.

I think all races are in "GP"/ "F1" cars. At one time I feel confident with the "Novice" training car, I want to go in a race with other "Novice" cars but to my surprise, I am in a full GP car. Almost unable to handle that one :-( But the feel of speed makes me yell (YES!!!)

Still practising, and more practising.....

Griffin.

You need to make a few small adjustments to be able to race against the AI
using the lesser powered cars. Here is the info needed, taken from the FAQ
page on Alison Hine's site. http://simracing.com/alison/gpl/

5.3 Why can't I race against the AI while driving a Trainer?
Actually, you can. You have to change one small item in your player.ini
file. I recommend you create a new player just for racing in each of the
Trainers. For example, I have three drivers: Alison Hine (for the GP car),
Ali-F2 Hine (for the Advanced Trainer), and Ali-F3 (for the Basic Trainer).

Once you've created the extra player or two, open the GPL players folder (by
default, C:\SIERRA\gpl\players) and then open the folder for one of the
training players. For example, I would open
C:\SIERRA\gpl\players\Hine__Ali-F2. Now, using a text editor, edit the file
called player.ini.

Look for a parameter called driverRating. It's in the [ Personal
Information ] stanza. Change the value of driverRating to 2 for the Advanced
Trainer, or 1 for the Basic Trainer.

Now, when you race as one of these new drivers, the AI will go slower.

5.4 Why do I need to create a new driver for racing with a Trainer?
One reason is for convenience, so you don't have to keep going in with a
text editor and changing the driverRating parameter.

But there's another reason. As you race, GPL keeps a database of your best
laps in a file called player.sts, in your driver folder. As you go more
quickly, a mechanism called the Global Hype system makes the AI go faster
too, to keep you challenged. However, if you set some quick times in a GP
car, and then switch to one of the trainers, you may find that the AI will
be going too fast for you to keep up with. Using different drivers for each
type of car eliminates this problem, because each driver has its own
database of quick times.

Incidentally, there's no harm in deleting your player.sts file, although the
AI may start running more slowly for a while if you do this after you've set
some quick times.

You can also over-ride the data in the database by setting a parameter
called npt_override. For details about this parameter, see the section
called "Controlling AI for league play" in the readme.txt file in your GPL
folder.

You can download some files I've modified which cause the fastest AI drivers
to be more responsive to the times recorded in this database, or to give the
field of AI cars a wider spread, which is useful if you are running fewer
than 19 AI cars.

For more information about the Global Hype system, see the AI section of
this FAQ.

In training, you can choose the Novice Trainer (F3), Advanced Trainer (F2)
or Grand Prix car (F1). In single races/world championship/multiplayer you
get a GP car unless you edit an .ini file in your driver folder.

Correct, but in multiplayer using GameSpyBoy you will get F2 and F3 if the
server demands it, so you only have to tweak your driver.ini file if you want
to race F2 or F3 single player.

However Olav, it is better to have seperate profiles set up because you then
have seperate track records and best laps for each category.

One important (for off-line racers) item is that you cannot run a
Championship Season in anything other than F1 cars.  Single races only in
the two lesser modes.
