VROC possible disconnect fix...

by Michael E. Carve » Fri, 23 Apr 1999 04:00:00

I thought I would share the following in hopes that it may help those
who have been experiencing severe disco probems GPL online.

Andy Morris wrote the following in the VROC e-mail list:

If any of you have followed, I have had a HUGE amount of trouble staying
connected to VROC over a 56k modem letely.  I blamed a lot of it on GSB,
primarily because of the timings involved.  That, however, was wrong as
I found out this weekend. Probably the only effect GSB had was to make
VROC so much more popular that my connect weaknesses were highlighted.
But the tweaks that helped me were NOT the ones described typically, so I
thought I would share them with everyone.

These came out of "The Expert Guide to Windows 98" by Minasi.  They seem
to have reclaimed my ability to connect and stay connected. FWIW Here is
what I changed :

1)  System.ini changes in the [386enh]

TrapTimerPorts=off  (default is ON by this line's absence in ini file)

ComBoostTime=150 (number represents milliseconds..increases a program's
priority after a byte has been received from the com port for [n] time.
You must fiddle with this number to find out what works best for you)

local=EGA$     (localizes video resources, supposed to speed video)

2) Core.ini file changes

added Clock_Delay of 8

Hope this helps......
Andy

Anyone know if the system changes will work with W95b?
The three edited items are absent in my ini file.
TIA
David Noe

In theory they should since they actually worked all the way back to
Windows 3.x

VROC possible disconnect fix...

by Eric Cot » Sat, 24 Apr 1999 04:00:00

Hello Micheal, i've had difficulty lately to host races on the Ferrari
Challenge league, after doing almost anything to clean
"my act" I did a lot of research with the nodes, and SPRINTLINK.NET
is really troublesome between (most of the time) Chicago and NY, this
is amplified in peak hours (19-2300 EDT).

One question: Adding Clock_Delay of 8 in core.ini
what does it do exactly ? Also I was running at 10
since last weekend, and I noticed while hosting, is if someone
has relatively high ping (over 500), my own screen starts to
stutter. Remco Moedt addressed me that going lower will be even worse.

What's the advantage if any compared to  let say 10 or 12 ?

thanks

Eric

This is what Randy Cassidy had to say about this setting:

This value tweaks how a client synchronizes itself with a server.  A
GPL server does not use this value, nor will it know or care what value
you, as a client, are using.  The smaller this number, the more 'frame
stuttering' you're likely to see.  The larger this number, the more
'clock smashing' you're likely to see.  I believe the default value is
12.

Randy

% What's the advantage if any compared to  let say 10 or 12 ?

So as a host, it shouldn't affect connection, but could cause your
screen to stutter.  I hazard to guess that what happens from the client
point of view, is by lowering the number the client will send a clock
sync request in its packets more often.  The stutter would be caused by
the minor adjustments of where one is on the track compared to data
received by host that quickly adjusts location.
