I'll try to answer this briefly and let others give their full reviews
elsewhere. Basically I thought it was entertaining. Biggest gripe- the
darn music played too loudly when they should have just let the engine roar
come through. Overall, not nearly as bad as I had expected but certainly
not a great movie. I would see it again on video someday just for the
special effects and all the CART cameos. Then again I watch the movie
"Planet of the Apes" repeatedly whenever its on so be warned. :-)
Yes- if you look beyond the chase sequence through the streets of Chicago
and the other obviously bogus stuff, you'll see that some of it looked
pretty good. And there was actual race footage tossed in here and there
too - real enough for you? :-) There were plenty of special effects crash
scenes as you've no doubt seen in all the promo shorts, and I have to admit
these were pretty awesome even if unrealistic. One sequence in particular
in Germany (they claimed, though I don't know if its actually the
Lausitzring or not since they haven't raced there yet) had one heck of a
crash which they must have modeled partly on Nicki Lauda's crash in Germany
in '76 (sort of- I'm stretching it here). But much more visually
spectacular. I really don't want to spoil the film any more than I just
did. You'll see what I mean if you catch it. There were some bits that
were pretty good, while other parts and effects were distracting -like a
blurred effect they used on some street courses to give the impression of
speed (I guess).
I wouldn't say 'good', but maybe 'entertaining' if they like action movies.
:-) My wife said it reminded her of Mission Impossible 2 in some ways. I'm
still not sure what she meant, but probably that it was a lot of action and
glitz with a simple plot that seemed secondary to the techno effects
onscreen. I can't remember the film's rating but it was probably PG-13.
Absolutely no *** scenes despite lots of shots of pit babes and a
background story involving marital infidelity, sort of. It was very tame.
lol! I caught that exchange
