And I allways thought a usenet Troll -was- a Norwegian Troll.. it
never made sense to me either :)

That picture looks a little like the ancient Nauga. A tough little creature
that we're all familiar with because of his skin, a fine replacement for
leather. Although the Nauga is extinct, Naugahyde is still easily found and
used in many applications.

> Isn't that 'trawling'?

Trawling at sea, trolling on lakes.  Trawling is done on a much larger
scale:

 Troll \Troll\, v.
  4. To angle for with a trolling line, or with a book drawn
along the surface of the water; hence, to allure.

Trawl \Trawl\, n.
   1. A fishing line, often extending a mile or more, having
many short lines bearing hooks attached to it. It is used
for catching cod, halibut, etc.; a boulter. [U. S. &      Canada]

   2. A large bag net attached to a beam with iron frames at its
ends, and dragged at the bottom of the sea, -- used in
fishing, and in gathering forms of marine life from the
      sea bottom.

Well, that's really hard to do on a group-wide scale... the
problem why trolling is so successful is that *someone*
eventually replies (maybe a newbie or someone infuriated by the
troll's ramblings), then someone else points out he shouldn't
have, then someone else points out there is no need to
full-quote top post the rubbish a second time if it's that
shite (that would be me ;-), and so on, until the whole affair
erupts in a huge flamewar, with the troll sitting back and
smiling to himself smugly ;-)

To Achim: ToFuRank isn't trolling, it's an educational
institution ;-)

Cheers,

uwe

Trolls often resemble stray cats... if you don't feed them... they don't
come around...

Historically, trolls often do win.  Many newsgroups are shadows of their
former selves.

Looks pretty accurate to me :)

We just don't have to physically see them here.
